It’s that time again. The wind begins to bite, the store windows are lined with zombies in stilettos, and a young girl’s fancy turns to fishnet stockings.
Like many parents, you may be frustrated and perhaps nauseated by the ubiquity of sexualized halloween garb for the under-12 set. Melissa Wardy of Pigtail Pals relays a disturbing example on her Facebook page:
“Seeing is Disbelieving: At my son’s preschool Halloween party this afternoon one of the older sisters was wearing the teen version of the Clawdeen Wolf Monster High Halloween costume. I do not exaggerate when I say this girl’s entire bottom was visible under the costume’s very short skirt. Her entire bottom, and she was all of 11 or 12 years old. Her parents paid $30 for a costume that does not cover her private parts.”
People, I have the solution.
Last week, my daughter got all gussied up in her fairy costume and we shuttled her off to the firehouse Halloween party that our ladies auxiliary (and in particular one incredibly mom organizer) throws every year. This week – she informed my father-in-law she wants to be a ghost for Halloween.
Yes, the request came just a few days before the big day – after I’d already gotten together the costume she’d requested (Tinkerbell), and found appropriate attire to go underneath said costume to make it upstate New York weather-proof. Continue reading »
Everyone has a bad hair day, but on Halloween you get one and only one chance to make your follicular mark, so you’d better get it right. The folks over at Cozy’s Cuts for Kids in New York City have come up with fool-proof ways to make your little trick-or-treater shine in some of this season’s most popular costumes.
When I was a kid a neighbor we nicknamed the “Banana King” would hand out bananas every year on Halloween. Bananas? On Halloween? Was he out of his mind?
Target was recently forced to delete an “Illegal Alien” costume from its online catalogue. And, yes, it’s what you think it is. The costume came equipped with an alien mask, green card and orange jumpsuit with “Illegal Alien” emblazoned across the chest.
Because you knew it had to happen.
Making toys is hard. Who knows what kids like, amIright? Here, example, are some good intentioned toys that crossed the line from fun to frightening.
