What do you do with all of your kid's Halloween candy?
One year a friend of mine gave away all of her kids’ Halloween candy on Freecycle. I know this because I emailed her right away and claimed it for myself (well, really for my husband.) He hid it from the kids and me, and it lasted a really long time. Of course, she let her kids eat some of the loot first after trick-or-treating, but then anything after that was gone. What do you do?

9-year-old has candy freak-out
Kids, they love candy. A lot. But generally their quest for a sugar rush doesn’t lead them to get arrested. That is, if you aren’t a certain 9-year-old girl from Fort Myers, Florida. On Halloween (aka National Sugar High Day) this fourth-grader from the Royal Palm School threw an epic tantrum while heading home on the school bus. Halloween candy sales up
As I sit here stuffing my kids’ Halloween candy in my face, it turns out I may not be alone in my overindulgence.
American Halloween candy sales have set a new record this year, with sales at $2.3 billion.
The National Confectioner’s Association reports that the average American spends $7.36 on Halloween candy.
I imagine if you live in a high Halloween traffic area, your candy expense is quite a lot higher than that.
Unless you give out the cheap stuff.
My 11-year-old was so intent on collecting the maximum amount of candy, he could barely think of anything else.
Did he succeed? While I don’t think he got any more than last year’s trick-or-treating outing, he certainly got more than he’ll ever eat… which means mom and dad will help out some and the rest will get pitched.

By the time you read this, most of you will have purchased the candy you plan to pass out to trick-or-treaters this Halloween, but what you may not know is that the fun-size candy bars and other chocolate treats sold by Hershey, Mars and Nestle were likely made from cocoa harvested in West Africa by child slaves. Dr. Craig Callen, DDS, of Mansfield, Ohio, would like you to know that Halloween candy is not good for kids, according to Fox News. Because of that earth-shattering revelation, Dr. Callen will do his part to save the planet — one cavity-free tooth at a time — by offering trick-or-treaters $1/pound to fork over their unwrapped miniature Snickers bars and Sour Patch Kids between Oct. 31 and Nov 4. Because Halloween candy is not good for kids. Got that?
Besides Halloween being bad for kids à la the candy? The danger! Stranger danger. Dark danger. Kids getting lost danger. Kids getting hit by cars while they’re lost in the dark danger. Costume chemicals. Non-flame retardant costumes. (Check out Jezebel’s piece on all the ways your kids could die on Halloween. There are a lot of them.)
Chocolate coins are not a favorite in my house.
One of the topics of conversation among kids in the neighborhood on Halloween always centers around which homes give out the best candy, the full-size Snickers, Milky Ways, and Tootsie Pops.
While I am always thankful that people take time out of their day to offer candy to my kids and make Halloween fun, honestly there are some treats given out that they should just keep. You know those treats that aren’t treats at all…we’ve all been there in seeing something dropped into our children’s trick-or-treat bag and cringing just a little.
