Walking is a great mode of transportation: you get some exercise, it’s gentle to the planet and you put yourself out in your neighborhood where you can meet your neighbors, enjoy the weather and have those pleasant little surprises that go by too fast when you only see the world out car windows.
It can be hard to commit to a walking lifestyle, and to do it safely. Especially with kids. This week we saw the tragic case of a mom who was tried for vehicular homicide after her child was killed crossing the street.
Today, HuffPo offers up a list of the most, and least, walkable cities in America.
How old is too old for diapers? Noelle Howey has a terrific article up on Babble today about her four-year-old son. He’s still in diapers, and both mother and child are cool with this.
Noelle expresses regret about the amount of landfill waste her son’s pull-ups produce, but otherwise she’s happy to let him poop in his pants until he’s good and ready to use the toilet.
Normally, I’m a crusader for more relaxed parenting. I’d love to see everyone lighten up about just about every aspect of it. Stop worrying so much about what your kids eat, when they sleep, how they learn, who they play with.
But this is one laissez-faire parenting move that just pushes my buttons. I liked Noelle’s piece, and her attitude suggests I’d love the way she raises her kids. Yet I’m going to have to respectfully urge everyone reading this not to follow her example.
Boy or girl, play kitchens are tops with the toddler/preschooler set.
We bought ours when our older daughter was two, and five years later it still sees regular play, especially during playdates. Kids love to imitate what they see their parents doing, which is why play food has come so far: deli sandwiches, sushi, and felt pancakes.
Play kitchens can be a relatively expensive toy, though, especially if don’t want to buy a plastic one. That’s why I love, love, love the “Giggleberry” family’s version. On Little Milla’s second birthday, her grandparents presented her with a gorgeous, deluxe, custom-made play kitchen from a repurposed entertainment center.

One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions among my friends this year is to live a greener life. Many of us already recycle what we can and a few of us even have composting bins out back. But despite our good intentions, none of us will come close to living as green as the Strauss family of Longhope, Gloucestershire in the U.K.

Halloween isn’t one of the holidays that comes to mind when I think “wasteful” — anything that involves the wearing of costumes and eating of delicious candy is not a waste to me. But it could be a lot more green. Authors and mother-daughter team Lynn Colwell and Corey Colwell-Lipson have written a book about greening your holidays called “Celebrate Green” and went on NPR show “Tell me More” to talk about ideas for a green Halloween.
