If you’re part of the Twitterverse, chances are you followed closely the events of Troy Davis’ last hours. The 42-year-old Georgia man was convicted in 1991 of the 1989 murder of Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail and sentenced to the death penalty. Even as he was strapped to a gurney for several hours Wednesday night, waiting to see if the Supreme Court would stay his execution, Davis maintained his innocence. The Huffington Post reports, “Davis stated that he had not carried a gun the night of the murder and did not shoot the officer.” Minutes before his lethal injection, Davis told the officer’s brother and son (who witnessed the execution), “All I can ask is that you look deep into this case so you can really find the truth.” Continue reading »
In 120 school districts across the country, kids always have a three-day weekend. As a means to balance increasingly tight budgets, some school districts are moving to a four day school week.
One of those districts is Peach County Schools in Georgia. Faced with laying off 39 teachers last year, the 4,000 student district chose instead to close down schools one day a week, cutting over $400,000 from their budget. And it paid of in more ways than one.
Kids came to school more often, as did their teachers, cutting the substitute teacher budget by two thirds. Test scores rose, and the graduation rate will reach 80 percent for the first time in years, say district officials. Working parents in Peach County were able to send their kids to an inexpensive “Monday care” program sponsored by the local Boys and Girls club.
It’s working for Peach County, but can four day school weeks really have a positive impact on learning?
A metro Atlanta babysitter kept a cool head during a home invasion last week.
When two men stormed the house with baseball bats, Lilly Thorpe worried she and the three-year-old boy she was watching would be hurt. Instead of panicking, though, Thorpe offered the men a Coke. That grace under pressure just might be what saved her.
“Black children are an endangered species,” read the billboards along Georgia’s highways this month. The signs were paid for by Georgia’s largest anti-abortion organization, Georgia Right to Life. The group’s primarily white staff bought the ads as part of a campaign to woo more black women to their cause.
Georgia’s Right to Life is picking up on a larger effort by anti-choice groups around the country to frame abortion as a racist practice and organizations like Planned Parenthood as part of a vast conspiracy to prevent the births of black children.
“I don’t understand why this has gotten blowed up so big,” Patty Jo Marsh says in a videotaped interview. “I love my children. We’d never do anything to harm our kids.”
Nothing, except tattoo each with a homemade tattoo gun made out of cobbled up wiring and a sharpened guitar string, that is.
