My girls, ages 5 and 2, so far show no signs of precocious genius. Neither of them can read, write more than a few words or do long division in her head. They don’t play violin, perform Shakespeare from memory or beat me at chess.
Next to a lot of my friends precocious little geniuses, they look kinda dumb. And I’m OK with that.
MomLogic has a great piece on the annoying toddler parents who simply do go on about what brilliant, accomplished people their two-year-olds are. I’m sure I’m guilty of any number of parenting sins, but at least teaching my kids a lot of Stupid Human Tricks isn’t on the list.
Every parent thinks their kid is a genius. But for some people, their kids actually are far above the norm. They’re not just good in school — as a matter of fact, sometimes they are not good in school at all. Instead, they fall into the category of “gifted children.”

Besides winning the lottery, playing the market or getting a big old book deal, one of my most current and prevalent fantasies is of designing a best selling iPhone App. But you know what stops me – besides a great idea- not knowing how to do the programming. It’s so secret seven-year-old Quaid Guarino can’t tell you WHAT he does with his LEGO bricks. But it’s about to earn him some big bucks, and revolutionize the way our kids play with these already out-of-the-box toys.
Or so rumor has it. Guarino, who we’ll remind you is seven years old, came up with something cool (yes, we wish we knew) to do with his toys. So cool, that when he told his parents he wanted to share it with the company, they didn’t blow him off. Continue reading »
