Over half of Americans now support gay marriage
A few days ago, I wrote about how gay parents have become more socially accepted than single moms. That article said that 50 % of Americans support gay marriage.
The truth is even better: a new study released today shows that for the first time, a majority of Americans support marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples. The study, conducted by ABC News and the Washington Post, found that 53% of Americans say same-sex marriage should be legal. Just a year ago, that number was only 47%.
The improved support for same-sex marriage follows a long trend. Americans have been coming out in greater numbers to support same-sex marriage since 2004, when only a third supported it.
“America’s got a bad case of gayby fever,” writes Thomas Rogers at Salon, who says that the gay parenting boom is reshaping the American family.
According to a 2007 study, more than one in three lesbians has given birth and one in six gay men have fathered or adopted a child. The same studied showed that more than half of gay men and 41 percent of lesbians say they want to have a child.
Pop culture is keeping up with the trend. The Sundance hit “The Kids Are Alright,” starring Annette Bening and Julianne Moore as gay parents, is already getting buzz as the “must-see” movie of the summer. Hit TV show “Modern Family” features gay parents. Dan Savage’s memoir “The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Go Get Pregnant” has just been turned into an off-Broadway musical.
And celebrities such as Ricky Martin, Clay Aiken, Rosie O’Donnell, Melissa Etheridge serve as the unofficial spokespeople for gay parenthood. Continue reading »
A mom who converted to evangelical Christianity after ending a lesbian relationship has reportedly taken off with her daughter to keep the child from her ex-girlfriend.
Lisa Miller made news mid-last year when she faced jail time for refusing to submit to shared custody with Janet Jenkins even though Jenkins and Miller were legally tied in a civil union at the time of the child’s birth. Continue reading »

A gay man is taking advantage of an Irish law that works against homosexuals to gain visitation with the little boy created with his donated sperm.
The AP reports the heavily conservative government in Ireland does not recognize lesbians as a valid family unit. So the gay man who helped them create their now three-year-old son retains rights even though he’s not a traditional father. Continue reading »
