En Francais: Is my son gay?
An Android app available in France claims to let you know whether or not ton fils est homo by answering a few simple, stereotypical questions. This isn’t the first gay app to make the news (and I’m not even counting Grindr, which now has a tamer, straighter, ahem, “partner” app called Blendr, in case you like looking for love in all the wrong places). You may remember that back in March, Apple discontinued the “gay cure” app created by Exodus International because it violated their anti-hate speech policy.
I wonder if French citizens will be similarly outraged by the app, “Mon fils et-il gay?” The quiz questions are pretty silly and may come across more tongue-in-cheek in their native language, but here they are translated to English, with some additional clarification: Continue reading »
Remember Constance McMillen? She’s the student that was banned from escorting her girlfriend to the senior prom in Mississippi. The local branch of the A.C.L.U jumped to her defense and petitioned the school on her behalf. School officials responded that same-sex dates (not to mention tuxedo-wearing females) were against school policy. The civil rights organization shot back that said policy was unconstitutional. End result: the prom was canceled for everyone. Luckily for Constance (and all non-heterosexual kids), the A.C.L.U. wants to continue to fight the fight.
Imagine a whole week in a middle school where every kid can walk down the hallways without getting picked on. Fat kids, dumb kids, nerdy kids: they all can go about their business without anyone mocking them for the trait that makes them stand out.
The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), Scholastic Children’s Publishing and 40 other partners hopes to create just that with its No Name Calling Week, which kicks off today. Continue reading »
You know all those schools being sued for NOT protecting kids from bullying? A California school district is another boat going in the other direction. Parents are suing the Alameda schools for requiring their kids learn to BE NICE to other kids. Gasp!
Of course these kids aren’t any old kids – they’re lesbian, gay and transgender kids who the school district dares to think should be protected from getting their asses kicked on the playground. Continue reading »
