What's going to go in this bag?
Am I the only one who regularly digs through her crisper only to find a fuzzy green pepper that started out red snuggled into a pile of brown parsley? Every once and a while we manage to eat all the fresh food I buy in a week, and when we do, it’s like I’ve climbed the Mt. Everest of home economics. But, given the food news this week, it’s time to buckle down and get serious about meal planning.
Why? Because this year’s drought in Russia and the growing demand for beef in China and India, which translates into a growing demand for grain, mean the cost of food is going up. And yet, on the whole, Americans don’t use 25 to 50 percent of the food we buy. What’s going on in our refrigerators?
A Florida girl is now the poster child for an effort to get more nutritious lunches in the nation’s schools. The face of Jasmine Messiah, 8, will appear in posters all over D.C. as a part of the Healthy School Lunches campaign’s effort to lobby Congress.
In the poster, a dialogue bubble asks why the Miami-Dade County, Florida, girl doesn’t get healthy lunches like the First Daughters do. In fact, Jasmine is a vegetarian, but there are not vegetarian options in her school cafeteria.

It’s no surprise to anyone who’s been, well, out in public pretty much ever, that there’s a serious obesity epidemic in this country. Two out of every three American adults are overweight and so are one out of five children. Obesity in childhood can lead to a host of health problems later in life, and is the biggest single market for later developing diabetes.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius spoke at a conference on obesity and prevention this week, and touted some new strategies suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help combat the obesity epidemic.
Among them are bringing more grocery stores to underserved areas, expanding schools’ physical education choices, and encouraging breast feeding.
