Worried that your toddler isn’t getting enough chocolate in her diet?
You’re in luck! Formula company Mead-Johnson recently introduced chocolate and vanilla-flavored versions of their Enfagrow formulas for toddlers.
“What’s next, genetically modifying moms to produce chocolate breast milk?” writes New York University nutrition professor and author Marion Nestle in The Atlantic.
Nutritionists have complained for years about toddler formula because after a child’s first birthday, food should replace milk as the primary source of nutrients. And the milk your child is going to drink certainly doesn’t need to be flavored with sugar and cocoa.
A new study of Canadian women reveals that new moms sent home from the hospital with free samples of formula are less likely to exclusively breastfeed.
The study found that almost 40% of Canadian women leave the hospital with formula samples. Women who don’t get the formula samples are 3.5 times more likely to be exclusively breastfeeding after 2 weeks. Continue reading »
In a recent article, Time magazine discusses a new way of feeding babies that’s gaining in popularity: Giving baby breast milk exclusively from a bottle.
These moms are pro-breast milk, but for a variety of reasons, they don’t want to feed their baby directly from their breast. “I just did not like it. I felt locked away. I was young and self-conscious, and everyone would leave the room when I breast-fed. I was lonely,” Texas mom Crystal Bard told Time.
Other moms complain that they don’t like the way nursing feels, that they wanted dads to share in feeding responsibilities, or that they didn’t want the commitment of being constantly tied to a nursing baby.
If you’re a parent who reads the news, then you’ve probably worried about BPA. But a new study suggests that it’s parents of newborns, especially bottle-fed newborns, that should worry the most.
BPA is found in polycarbonate bottles, food cans, dental fillings, and even in the air. But when Swiss researchers examined how different types of BPA exposure could possibly affect nine different age groups, they found that it was bottle-fed babies who were at the greatest risk.
Here’s an interesting twist in the battle between breastmilk and formula, staging ground: Haiti.
A U.S. reservist, sent to the island just after the earthquake three weeks ago, pumps her breasts a few times a day and sends the bottled milk to USS Comfort. The ship is a floating hospital anchored just off of Port-au-Prince. Among its patients are babies who were injured in the quake and it’s those babies who are getting what milk Coast Guard Lieutenant Teresa Wolf has supplied.

UNICEF has weighed in on the breastmilk vs. formula debate going on in the blogosphere about how best to help Haitian babies.
The answer: do not send breastmilk or formula. Send money.
UNICEF is handling the food aid efforts in the quake-ravaged nation, so their opinion is the one that counts.They are not taking donations of human milk at this time, and are strongly discouraging outside donations of infant formula. Continue reading »
