When money is tight and there’s more going out than coming in, we can all begin to feel a little desperate. Many parents will turn to credit cards and bank loans as last gasp efforts to fill in the financial holes. But what happens when the credit cards are maxed out and the loan officers won’t return your calls?

And while Junior may not have any real money in his piggy bank, what he does have is a squeaky clean credit history. When asked whether they would give credit cards to their teen children, a whopping 71% of parents polled by ABC firmly clenched their wallets tightly and voted, “Hell no!” Fears of rampant American Apparel and Urban Outfitter shopping sprees likely fueled that response, but is it necessarily the right one?
John Nelson, like so many others, was a victim of the economic meltdown our country is trying to deal with; he lost his job and was out of work for a year, before finding another, lower-paying position. Nelson is also a divorced father, ordered to pay child support. After he was laid off, Nelson filed for a reduction in his child support obligation, but it took more than a year to get a court date and then, when he finally did get to make his case before a judge, the judge actually increased the amount Nelson had to pay, leaving him with just $58 per week to live on.
When I first heard kids were going to “money camp,” I was ready to be indignant about the pressure for earnings put on the young, the importance put on the trappings of materialism, yadda, yadda.
