It’s a continual lament around our house — there are so few films that are suitable for young children. My mother-in-law likes to take her grandkids to the movies, but it’s hard to find ones that we feel are acceptable. Being animated doesn’t automatically mean a film is okay for the little ones. Even Disney films are, in our house, “for big kids” because of the violence and gender stereotypes. So when a state decides to offer a tax credit for “family-friendly” films being made there, it sounds like an idea long overdue.
“Where the Wild Things Are” is probably one of the most hyped films of the year. I had reservations going in, but I was pleasantly surprised.
By almost any measure, this is a very well made movie. The visuals are terrific, the creatures look about as real as they can, and the kid who plays Max (real name Max Records, believe it or not) does a great job.

Here’s a casting challenge. Find a flawless blonde bombshell who’s 5’9” and has the measurements of 36-18-33. Oh and she’ll have to be both ridiculously glamorous, and virginally wholesome all at the same time. These will be some very tough shoes to fill. But some lucky freakishly shaped actress will soon have the opportunity to play Barbie – the Barbie – on the big screen. Continue reading »
Sony asked screenwriter James Vanderbilt to work on scripts for two more Spider-Man movies, according to Wired.com.
This is good news for me. And my kids. Definitely my kids. Well, me too. We’re big Spider-Fans (ouch) in my house. Less good is the news that we’ll be waiting a long time for new Spider-flicks. Number 4 is due in 2011, and who knows when 5 and 6 will come out. Continue reading »
Starting off with some sports news, and its big stuff: Tiger Woods lost the PGA title. South Korea’s Y.E. Yang beat him. He was ranked 110 in the world. Probably not anymore, though.

Allen Brown of Jersey City, New Jersey has been arrested and charged with running a “human sex trafficking ring”. In other words, he’s accused of being a pimp. One of the you-can’t-make-this-stuff-up details is that he had a throne in his living room, according to CBS 3 News. Brown allegedly ran a particularly henious operation. “This is a case about human trafficking which, put simply, is modern-day slavery,” New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram told NJ.com. Also arrested: Brown’s mother and niece, along with four other folks. I guess this was the family business. Allegedly. Ouch. Continue reading »
