The number one concern for parents? The safety and well being of our children. Our job is to keep them safe and sound. So when there is any warnings or causes for concern, many parents tap into some pretty deep fears. Case in point, airplane safety and the thought that their plane could crash.
Southwest Airlines has been making headlines for cracks found in not one, not two, but three of their planes. On Friday, on a plane that left Phoenix, AZ, a 5-by-1 foot section of the fuselage skin came off making the cabin lose pressure. The plane was immediately grounded. No one was harmed, but to be one of the passengers of that plane must have been terrifying, especially for those with children on the plane, or kids at home. In this rough economy, families are looking for affordable ways to take vacations. One increasingly popular tactic is to tack on time to a business trip. The hotel room is covered, so it’s often just a question of transportation.

Growing up, my family’s idea of a summer vacation involved piling into my dad’s Buick and enduring a 12-hour car ride to visit family. If getting there was a drag, the actual time spent hanging out with elderly relatives in rural Arkansas was pure torture. To my mind, this trek was not so much a vacation but an annual obligation that not even my parents enjoyed.
These days, no self-respecting kid is going to put up with that kind of nonsense. They want to play on the beach, cruise with cartoon characters and generally have the time of their lives. Recently on a CNN comment board for a story about fragrance-challenged airline passengers, the discussion segued into on-board kiddos. Should parents be permitted to fly with babies and small children? Pro or con, there’s little doubt that people are passionate in their feelings on the subject.
A Boston-based TSA agent was charged with child rape, sparking concerns and criticism from privacy and passenger advocates who continue to be unhappy with the new full-body scanners in use at many airports.
Just who does the TSA have manning those scanners anyway?
While this guy’s arrest had nothing to do with his professional duties, its unnerving at best to think of a pedophile patting down my daughter as we enter an airplane. It’s certainly not a thought that make me feel more secure.
Some would call life with three kids a bit of a zoo. For the Taviano family, it really is.
