If researchers were to set up video cameras up in your home and record your family life for a week, what do you think they would see? If the California families who participated in just such an experiment are any indication, they’d see fussing, fighting and a whole lot of stress and mess.
The video experiment, conducted by University of California graduate students from 2002 to 2005, recorded the everyday lives of 32 middle class families living in the Los Angeles area. We’ve had a lot of coverage about the very real dangers of bullying recently. Massachusetts has passed anti-bullying legislation in the wake of teen suicides, and schools all over the country are pushing for tougher measures to get kids to play nice with each other.
But what about affectionate teasing? The innocuous, playful taunting that goes on between family members, or a teenagers flirting? That’s a harmless game, right?
Research says no, Gretchen Rubin points out on the Happiness Project. While people teasing their friends and loved ones often feel affectionate and playful towards them, the people being teased tend to see the behavior as “malicious and annoying”.
Summer camp is a great way to keep kids entertained and out of trouble in the summer months, but in today’s economy, luxuries like camp are often the first thing to go.
Joan Brackin, a 64-year-old grandmother of nine from Grant City, MO, has come up with a solution for her family. According to the Los Angeles Times, Brackin takes in all of her grand-kids for a full week every summer and holds “Grandma Camp.”

Is the nuclear family over?
If it’s not, it’s certainly changing, says the British Families and Parenting Institute. A recently issued report found that parents are increasingly seeking help from grandparents, aunts and uncles as they deal with changes and setbacks in their own lives. “Families were pulling society in multiple directions, between work and home life, singleness and cohabitation and marriage, between growing older and forming families across our many cultural divides,” according to executive director of the institute Dr. Katherine Rake.
