Sesame Street is the ne plus ultra of kid’s shows, the one show most of us don’t feel guilty flipping on for awhile so we can do something crazy like eat a meal or go to the bathroom. While it’s not the totally wacky and hilarious show I remember from my own childhood, there’s still that wonderful sense of gentleness, for lack of a better word. Monsters, kids, and grownups all peacefully coexist, life’s challenging moments (economic woes, the death of a neighborhood friend, the arrival of a sibling) are all gently explained, and the mysterious world of letters and numbers and colors is unlocked in the most fun and subtle way.

A while ago, the federal government reached out to the crew at Sesame Street to help educate the kids about healthy habits to help fight the swine flu.
It’s all fun and games until a little kid sees Elmo roughing up tourists in New York City.
If the economic news is scary for us, imagine how scary it is for our kids. We understand all the reasoning behind why we’re cutting back and worrying a little (or a lot) more about the future. All our kids realize is that their parents are stressed and sad and sometimes a little irritable, and that fun things their familiy used to do aren’t happening anymore.
Yeah, Elmo’s been know to bust a move, but he ain’t got nothing on this toddler. Hey Elmo, you like panckakes? ‘Cause you just got served. This kid totally OWNS that muppet. And really, don’t we wish all conflicts in the world could be resolved in dance battles?
