Elmo to help low-income families eat better
Eating well can challenging for any family, but for a family on a limited income, it’s even more difficult. And given our current economic climate, more and more families are having a harder time putting food on the table, much less making sure that food is nutritious. But Elmo and the gang want to help. And the help is right around the corner.
On Monday, the Sesame Workshop announced their newest project: Food for Thought: Eating Well on a Budget. They’re hoping to make a difference to the one in four children who suffer from “food insecurity,” which means they aren’t consuming food that meets nutritional needs due to financial instability. According to the Sesame Workshop‘s website, 9.6 million of these children are under the age of six.
The plan is to provide such families with free “outreach kits,” which, among other things, will include an educational video that features Sesame Street’s four newest muppets, known simply as “the Superfoods.” The video also features Elmo along with some real-life families who qualify as food insecure. The Cat and the Hat has just been put out as an iPhone app by Oceanhouse Media, the nice people who brought us the Grinch game last Christmas. They’ve also released Dr. Suess’ ABCs. Not a moment too soon. My kids got to playtest these on a harrowing cross-country flight. I love you for that, Oceanhouse.
At $3.99, these apps are a little pricey for an iPhone game, but cheaper than a print edition of the book. Continue reading »

Google has replaced their logo with a series of Sesame Street-inspired images in honor of the big birthday.
1969 was certainly a banner year. Neil Armstrong touched down on the moon. Woodstock took place in upstate New York. The Beatles released Abbey Road. The Boeing 747 is first placed into service. The television shows The Brady Bunch and Monty Python’s Flying Circus debuted. While those shows, for better or for worse (not necessarily in that order), eventually went off the air, another show that got its start in 1969 is still going strong: the venerable children’s show Sesame Street.
It would be difficult to be a part of American society and not be familiar with the show — everyone, it seems, knows Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, and the ubiquitous Elmo. The show was meant to depict the sort of world kids in the big city themselves lived in and the idea worked. It worked so well that now, forty years later, the show is as popular as ever. As of 2006, Sesame Street was the most watched children’s show in the world — there are 20 international independent versions and it is shown in over 120 countries.
