On Monday, the Obama administration announced plans to change how we assess whether schools are succeeding or failing, and to change how federal dollars are handed out based on such assessments. In an Op-Ed piece in the New York Times, Susan Engel, a senior lecturer in psychology and the director of the teaching program at Williams College, laid out her vision of the ideal classroom.

Last week, I wrote about the Scholastic company’s request that an author, Lauren Myracle, change her new book to eliminate a lesbian couple — the mothers of one of the main characters. Myracle refused and Scholastic decided not to include the book in their spring book fairs. Then people got wind and, understandably, got upset. And now, Scholastic has changed it’s mind — the book will be available at their middle school book fairs this spring. So why are parents and LGBT advocates still upset?

Let’s say you’re an elementary school teacher and your students’ moms show up to a parent conference in low cut shirts, mini skirts or tight jeans. Would it be appropriate to write a note asking them to dress “discreetly” for conferences instead? As a mom who’s feeling just a bit sniffly today after I dropped off my daughter at kindergarten this morning, I’m liking one of the latest entries on the Nurtureshock blog. Namely, that “redshirting” kids or keeping them out of kindergarten an extra year so they’ll do better actually doesn’t help much at all.
Two new studies found that at most, there’s a 4-percentage-point difference in how well the oldest kids do versus the youngest, and much of that can be explained away by who has babies when. I first thought this sounded sweet: rapper 50 Cent is going to give a free concert to the kids in his neighborhood. Then I had to stop and wonder: how do you make a 50 Cent show family friendly?
Will he sing three words and leave?
