Studies have found that children in families who regularly eat together are less likely to smoke, drink, do drugs, get depressed, develop eating disorders and consider suicide. They do better in school and are more likely to put off having sex. As such, many families make a point to dine together as often as possible.

The makers of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) dismiss studies showing that it may make you fatter than equivalent amounts of sugar. They’ve poured $30 million into an ad campaign portraying HFCS avoiders as uninformed busybodies trying to take away our favorite treats. But in spite of their best efforts, food manufacturers (hey, doesn’t that sound tasty–manufactured food!) are dumping HFCS in favor of sugar, with Hunt’s ketchup being the latest in a series of high-profile products now proudly waving a “No HFCS!” banner. Not surprisingly, the corn refining industry (another tasty-sounding phrase) is fighting back with a grand plan: they’ll change the name! Are we consumers really so easy to fool?

In theory, I am the cook in our household. I received that title not because it is something I excel at but because, well, I suck at it less than anyone else. So I handle cooking and my wife handles clean-up. (I suck even more at cleaning.) It can be challenging, however, to come up with meals for which we not only have ingredients for (because I also suck at planning) but which my kids will like. Luckily, I now have The Family Kitchen on my side.
I won’t give away the conclusion to this season’s Top Chef — I remember last year I had recorded the season finale but a friend gave it away on Facebook before I had the chance to watch it — but there was a small nugget of information in the finale that could be helpful for parents of picky eaters.
Don’t worry about it.

I grew up in a big family (Mom, Dad, and 5 kids, all with hearty appetites) and have difficulty cooking for a small group. We almost always end up with leftovers after every dinner, often enough for an entire additional meal. While this, in theory, could save time the following evening, the truth is that we like a little more variety than that. There’s a trend taking off in Vancouver, British Columbia that might be the answer to my problem: food swaps.
