In July, an intoxicated women got into her car and drove a friend’s 11-year-old daughter to her death. Police say that 31-year-old Carmen Huerta was drunk as she sped down the Henry Hudson Parkway at 12:30 am with her own daughter and six other kids in tow. Hitting speeds of 80 miles per hour and dismissing her daughter’s pleas to slow down, Huerta lost control of her vehicle. The car flipped several times and finally smashed into a tree, ejecting three of the young girls.
Amazingly, only one of the passengers died in the crash — Leandra Rosado. Yesterday, Lenny Rosado, Leandra’s father, got a small bit of closure as the New York State Assembly endorsed a law that will increase the penalties for driving drunk with a minor in the car.
The bill, which is being called “Leandra’s Law“, will make it a felony for anyone with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 or more to drive with a child under 16 years of age in the car. Carmen Huerta, whose blood-alcohol was 0.132 at the time of the crash, was charged with driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter. She pleaded not guilty at her arraignment in October.
Lenny Rosado says that while nothing can ease the pain of losing his child to a drunk driver, he’s ecstatic about the law. Leandra wanted to be a star, he says. Now she will forever be remembered for protecting other children from drunk drivers.

The parents of Hamilton County, IN want to reduce teen traffic accidents in a big way, and have come up with safe driving initiatives called Now Think Now and Buckle Down.
Police were shocked when they pulled over an erratic driver to find the drunken 19-year-old mother was attempting to breastfeed while drive.
After almost creating a collision, the drunken mother gave chase while the police followed, assumed still breastfeeding. Oh, and she was driving without a license in an unlicensed vehicle.
An intoxicated 12-year-old strolled up to a convenience store parking lot in Lincoln Nebraska, stole an ’88 Honda Accord, then went on a driving rampage, crashing into three cars before a citizen stopped the boy and tackled him to the ground.
Remember those mock accidents that Students Against Drunk Driving used to put together every spring — usually right before prom — when you were in high school? You’d come to school to find a car wrecked on the school lawn, bloodied bodies strewn everywhere.
It was never very effective because — come on, we knew it was fake (unless you went to this school), and one of the “dead” victims would inevitably start laughing and ruin the whole thing.
Scare tactics are one way to get teens talking, though, and shock value isn’t wasted on them. A new 30-minute extremely graphic PSA that’s circulating around UK schools is realistic enough to make them sit up and take notice. The topic isn’t drunk driving, though, it’s driving while texting.

A Chicago woman, 48-year-old Cheryl Ranae Reynolds, has been arrested and accused of the following crime.
She was allegedly driving her SUV when she reached for a bottle of whiskey. Her 9-year-old daughter was in the passenger seat. The bottle fell to the floor. The SUV crashed. The girl hit her head on the windshield. Both were “taken to the hospital,” the story on Huffington Post (which is from the Associated Press) does not give a status on their injuries.
