Dad injected his son with heroin 10 times.
New Mexico Dad Jose Velasquez “faces felony counts of child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. If charged, he could face more than four years in prison,” KOAT reports. Why? Because according to court documents, he injected his 9-year-old son with heroin 10 times. Yet Velasquez’s cousin refuses to believe it, because “he and his ex-girlfriend have had many, many issues through the years” and so “there is some bad blood there.” Therefore, she says, “These are probably just accusations.”

Dixie Elixirs is markting pot-laced sodas
A company in Colorado is getting ready to market a new line of sodas with a special ingredient: marijuana.
Ostensibly for the medical marijuana community in Colorado and California, these sodas come in an array of brightly colored fruit flavors. They look exactly like the sodas my kids drink for a special treat when we go out to the local bagel shop. With flavors like Watermelon and Strawberry, they probably taste like them too.
Now, I am all for responsible adults enjoying their dope in any form they like in their own homes. Last year I was proud to see my state decriminalize marijuana possession. I’m hoping to see California legalize it for recreational use next month.
For adults.
Adults are not the target market for candy-flavored sodas. And the thought of some creepy company marketing dope to my kids makes my blood boil.
Does this contain controlled substances?
Child and Youth Services authorities removed a 3-day-old baby from her mother after the mother tested positive for opiates. But Elizabeth Mort says a poppy see bagel is to blame for her failed drug test.
A law in Pennsylvania allows hospitals to screen routinely for drugs following the birth of a baby. But the Pittsburgh American Civil Liberties Union is suing Jameson Hospital for not taking into account what the mother had eaten before getting a court order to have the child removed. A two-year-old was videotaped smoking a joint
First, there was the smoking toddler of Indonesia. Now there’s a 2-year-old girl who smokes weed.
A cellphone video of the child’s mother seemingly coaching her daughter to smoke a joint has been circulating on the internet.
Gawker reports that Cincinnati police released the video, but I’m not sure what purpose that would serve.
A concerned person who witnessed the incident had the good sense to send the tape to Family Services, who presumably contacted the police.
We all want to keep our kids off drugs. Most of us also shudder at the thought of our babies starting to date. I breathe a sigh of relief every time my 16-year-old assures me he’s still allergic to girls.
A surprising study from the University of Washington suggests that dating may be the lesser evil, and even act as a prophylactic against drug use.

The Centers for Disease Control’s National Youth Risk Behavior Survey monitors the health risk behaviors of children and young adults in the U.S. The 2009 report was released this week and the results reveal interesting trends and at least one frightening new statistic.
The good news is that teens seem to be more health conscious than ever. As compared to previous surveys, fewer reported drinking soda and more are eating fruit. Extreme dieting tactics such as fasting, taking diet pills and laxatives as well as intentional vomiting are also on the wane. A baby was found sucking on a ball of crack cocaine at a Minneapolis daycare this week. Now officials are surrounding the daycare with one big question – who dropped the rock?
According to WCCO, the thirteen-month-old was in the daycare’s “infant room” when daycare staff noticed he had something in his mouth. It turned out to be a cellophane wrapped rock of crack, and the baby was sucking away. Continue reading »
