This Soda’s Special Ingredient Will Make Your Blood Boil
A company in Colorado is getting ready to market a new line of sodas with a special ingredient: marijuana.
Ostensibly for the medical marijuana community in Colorado and California, these sodas come in an array of brightly colored fruit flavors. They look exactly like the sodas my kids drink for a special treat when we go out to the local bagel shop. With flavors like Watermelon and Strawberry, they probably taste like them too.
Now, I am all for responsible adults enjoying their dope in any form they like in their own homes. Last year I was proud to see my state decriminalize marijuana possession. I’m hoping to see California legalize it for recreational use next month.
For adults.
Adults are not the target market for candy-flavored sodas. And the thought of some creepy company marketing dope to my kids makes my blood boil.
Another Toyota Recall, Ex-Addict Mom Not Allowed to Volunteer at School, More
Afternoon Roundup:
Toyota has announced a voluntary safety recall on 2005-2008 Corolla and Corolla Matrix Models in order to address “Engine Control Modules (ECM) that may have been improperly manufactured.” Bad news for the company, given that the media storm over their accelerator recall has just barely subsided. A Rhode Island mom has been banned from volunteering at her daughter’s school because of felony drug possession she was convicted of before her daughter was born. She’s been clean for six years. Should she be allowed to help out with kindergarten activities? The ACLU thinks so. ABC
Potty training your kids? Maybe you shouldn’t! According to an article on Slate, going poopy on the potty goes against human nature – and causes a slew of health problems. Some say we should be encouraging our diapered ones to find a hole and keep squatting. GAWKER
Many people are willing to shell out big bucks for free-range eggs after the recent egg recall. (Get it? Shell? Eggs? Is this thing on?) The question is: are organic eggs any safer than factory-farmed ones? Here are the facts, but you have to figure out the answer yourself. THE WEEK
Finally, a hilarious video from Babelgum’s Kids Reenact series featuring Lady Gaga as a toddler. For some reason, unlike the Baby Gaga Telephone vid of yore, this doesn’t seem inappropriate at all, and is just plain silly fun. It’s like Bruno meets Blond Ambition meets Sesame Street. Take a look: Continue reading »
Blogger Goes Public With Heartbreaking Parent Secret
Babble blogger and author Katie Allison Granju has been writing openly about her life as a mother for years. She has walked the line between keeping her kids’ lives private while divulging details of her own. For years, she held back one fact in particular — to protect her son’s privacy, to keep judgment at bay. Until now.
While sitting at her son’s bedside as he fights to recover in an intensive care unit, she decided she no longer wanted to keep this part of her life private.
Her latest Home/Work post title says it all: “The parenting secret I am no longer willing to keep.” Katie writes, quite bravely — and with some lingering internal conflict about whether she’s doing the right thing — that she is the mother of a drug addict. Her 15-year-old son is in the hospital recovery from a near fatal overdose.
It should not be surprising that there are opinions. Continue reading »
Mothers Fighting To Get Their Kids Back Need A Place to Live
It’s so, so easy to judge other parents. And when those parents are really and truly bad — not “I yelled at my kid in the grocery store” or “I let them watch craploads of TV” bad, but really really bad, like “I lost my kids to foster care because I’d leave them for days at a time while I went in search of more meth” bad — it’s impossible not to.
But this very well-written column from the LA Times looks at the hurdles many mothers face as they attempt to get their lives back together and win the chance to parent their children again. Continue reading »
