A child who looks to be about four years old is videotaped while she drives down the street through early morning traffic. And no, there is no adult controlling the wheel or pedals. She has some sort of extension device to reach the breaks and gas.
Part of me is like, um, speechless. And another part of me feels like it would be maybe a good idea? to teach my kids to drive at a young age, just in case? But not like I would EVER let them drive in TRAFFIC or with other cars or people anywhere near and oh yeah, not at age four or five WHAT? Watch for yourself below and let me know what you think. Young male drivers may have a reputation for putting the pedal to the metal and being reckless on the road, but a new survey by Allstate Insurance Co. reveals that it might actually be the girls we need to watch out for.
A national online survey of over 1,000 teens revealed that 48% of girls say they are likely to drive 10 miles over the speed limit. For boys, that number was quite a bit lower at just 36%. And these girls aren’t just driving faster, they are also driving tougher. 16% said they would characterize their own driving style as “aggressive” as compared to 9% back in 2005. Continue reading »
According to a survey of 1,279 five to 16-year-olds in the UK, kids are happier when Mom drives.
The survey, which painted dads as impatient and reckless and moms as competent and chatty, was performed by GEM, a motorist assistance company — sort of like the U.S. version of AAA. Read the rest of the results and tell us if you agree:
This week, Oprah had a moving op-ed piece in the New York Times about the danger of driving while using a cell phone. Whether you’re holding it or using a headset, talking or texting, there’s mounting evidence that using your phone in your car is just about as dangerous as driving drunk.
Most of us would never dream of getting behind the wheel after a few martinis, but we blithely pick up our phones while driving.
A few weeks ago, a friend posted about this problem to her blog. I was shocked by the number of parents who weighed in to say what I have always felt: my kids distract me, too.
New moms might be better off staying home and taking a nap than getting behind the wheel of their car. That’s according to a new study out of Australia, where researchers claim that sleep-deprived moms are at higher risk of an accident when they get behind the wheel.
Close to three-quarters of Americans admit to driving while distracted, so why did one dad decided his own distractions were worth a trip to the police station?

When we head up to Lake Tahoe every February, one of the incidental highlights of the trip for my kids is seeing the giant snow-plowing front-end loader that comes up the road every morning. My kids aren’t alone, it appears, in their love of snowplows. A seven-year-old in the town of Reinfeld in Northeast Germany decided to do something nice for his dad and his community. His father had recently complained about the state of the roads so the boy took it upon himself to correct the situation. He borrowed a front-end loader from his parents’ business and got busy plowing.
