According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, drinking alcohol while pregnant is a really bad idea. In fact, their official stance on the matter leaves no wiggle room whatsoever: “No amount of alcohol consumption can be considered safe during pregnancy.”
That’s right. None. Not even a thimble full of whiskey or a small glass of wine. That seems rather harsh but generations of American women have faithfully followed that advice and avoided the bottle out of fears of doing some harm to their unborn child. Until now, that is. If the smoking baby is looking for a playdate, I think I’ve found him just the kid. My pals at BestWeekEver.tv posted this video yesterday of a little boy drinking at a Phillies game, presumably out of his Dad’s beer. Unless the guy next to him is his Karate Kid-style sensei, teaching him the ways of the American male. 1.) Drink beer. 2.) Shout, “Let’s go Phillies!” Wax on, wax off.

One swig of beer seems pretty harmless to me, but my grandfather woke me up every morning from age 3 on with a big mug of coffee that I would drink while our poodle lapped up Schlitz out of an ashtray, so maybe I’m not the best judge.
Awhile back, New York Times writer Paul Clarke said he thought it is good to drink around your kids as a parenting tactic because it teaches them moderation. Of course, Mr. Clarke is the Times’ alcohol beat writer, so I’m guessing he’s bound to come down on the “pro-drinking” side of many an argument. Me, I’m not so sure.
Remember the beloved children’s book The Runaway Bunny? Little Bunny tried his hardest to run away, but his mother kept blocking his escape route: She’d be a fisherman fishing him out of the stream, the wind blowing his sailboat, and the tree he flies home to.
“If you become a crocus in a hidden garden,” said his mother, “I will be a gardener. And I will find you.”
Cute when you’re three, of course. It’s comforting to know that mom’s always looking out for you. But at 18? It starts to move into the realm of creepy.
Parenting blogs are discussing a new trend this week: Colleges have noticed the influx of helicopter parents on their campuses, and they’re taking advantage of the extra attention. At some colleges, parents of underage students who get caught drinking get a phone call home to alert Mom and Dad.
Like a lot of my friends, I’ve subscribed to the idea that sharing an adult beverage with teens at home once in awhile – a glass of wine with dinner, say – will teach them to drink responsibly. They’ll learn how it’s done, the theory goes. That’s how they do it in Europe, people say knowingly over their own wine glasses.

Most Mommies and Daddies need a drink now and then. If Mad Men has taught us anything it’s good little boys and girls know how to mix dear old dad a good Bloody Mary. Whether you’re a drinker or a teetotaler, everyone has different rules when it comes to the combination of alcohol and kids. Some people are okay with having a couple glasses of wine while the kids are about; other won’t touch the stuff until the kids are snug in bed.
Then there’s going out. Would you take your toddler to a bar? Two bloggers butt heads in this Smackdown.
When you pour the bubbly tonight to ring in the New Year, will your kids get a glass? Or are you more Captain von Trapp-ish in your parenting, denying even those 16 going on 17 from a taste of champagne in celebration?
Experts disagree on whether it’s good or bad to give kids alcohol at home. Some think it sends the wrong message, others say it makes the forbidden look less tantalizing.
John Lieberman, director of operations for Visions Adolescent Treatment Centers, in California, says that it’s a big mistake to think letting kids have a drink at home will keep them from abusing alcohol later in life. In fact, he thinks it might be setting them up for the worst. Continue reading »
