Time to drop off little Benjamin!
My kids aren’t quite school age yet, but when they do you can damn well be certain I will drop them off while in my pajamas.
What’s it to ya?
I can wear whatever I want. If I want to wear a bikini it’s within my rights to do so.
Not so, says one school.
As Katherine Martin over at Baby Center reports, one school has a rampant parents in pajamas problem and has decreed that parents need to follow the same dress guidelines as students, including no pajamas. Continue reading »
A sixth grader has been told to refrain from displaying her rosary beads at school
Fortunately I don’t live in an area that has gang issues (unless you count my older daughter and the band of Snoopys that reside on her bed who can potentially seem menacing, I suppose, during a 3 am bed check). Which is why it’s hard for me to understand why a little girl in Omaha has been forbidden from wearing a rosary necklace due to gang activity in her area.
Twelve-year-old Elizabeth Carey told an ABC News affiliate that her school adopted a policy of banning rosary necklaces because they had become popular pieces of jewelry with gangsters.
Carey used to wear the rosary with a cross T-shirt and a cross bracelet so she could think of “how Jesus died on the cross and how he gave up all his sins for us.”
Chris' little number probably wasn't leather, but it still got plenty of attention, nonetheless.
Chris Whitehead is not afraid to put his foot down. Even if he extends that foot from beneath a skirt. The 12-year-old boy was fed up with the uniform requirements of Impington Village College, a private school near Cambridge, because he felt they were discriminatory. So he decided to make a statement.
You see, the weather has started to turn, and while the school’s uniform code provides relief for young ladies in the form of a skirt, it provides no such relief for the lads who must wear pants. And Chris didn’t think that was fair.
What happens when dress codes and religious freedom collide?
For Ariana Iacono, the jewelry she wears in her pierced nose is more than a fashion statement. It’s a symbol of her faith, a belief that modifying and manipulating one’s flesh strengthens the bond between mind, body and soul. Sixteen-year-old Brittany Indvik says she was just trying to promote breast cancer awareness when she and her friends wore brightly colored rubber bracelets declaring “I (Heart) Boobies, Keep-a-Breast” to school at Klahowya Secondary School.
But school administrators say the bracelets are disrupting the learning environment and have asked students to either turn the bracelets inside out or leave them at home. The teens are putting up a fight.
Is it a fashion statement? An invitation to debate? Or just one of those things kids (and by kids, I mean anyone under 30) do to differentiate themselves from those who came before? Friedrich Nietzsche first wrote that “God is Dead” more than 125 years ago and I’m sure it stirred up some controversy back then. Fast forward to modern day Washington State and the sentiment is once again causing a stir — this time over a high school yearbook photo.
I’ll admit it — much as I love wearing my PJs and relish having a job where I can actually work in them, wearing them out in public crosses a line. I’m not talking about a quick jaunt to retrieve the garbage can from the curb or get the mail, I’m talking about a somewhat disturbing trend I’m seeing toward wearing them to the grocery store or Target or whatever. It started with young, college age women and now I’m seeing women my own age, who are more than old enough to know better, schlubbing along in their fuzzy fleecy jammies in the middle of the day.
In Ireland, one school has taken a stand against mothers dropping their children off — or picking them up (!) — dressed in nightwear. Joe McGuiness, head teacher of St. Michael’s Prepatory School in Belfast, sent a letter home with students calling out such women as “slovenly and rude.” Continue reading »
