Earlier this week, I wrote about a retail store in the UK that recently introduced a line of plus-sized clothing for kids as young as three. In describing this larger toddler attire, I used various adjectives including “expanded,” “husky” and “fat.” While plenty of commenters took issue with my views in general, at least one took issue with my choice of words. Isn’t it rude, she asked, to call people, especially children, fat?
For the record, I was calling the clothes fat, not the kids who wear them. But I get her point and think her question is a good one. Is fat really a bad word? And if so, why should this be? Continue reading »
Just in case you don't want a man or a woman doctor.
Dr. Pauline Chen, writing in the NYT’s Well blog, says that one of her patients told her lately that he preferred women doctors. “You spend more time with patients,” he said. “It’s like you just know how to be a mother.” The motherly female doctor is a cliche of television and film, but is she real? And if women doctors are more maternal, what does that mean–do they talk more, reassure more, spend time with patients? Do any of things make patients more satisfied (or, maybe more importantly, more healthy?)
Maybe, yes, yes, sometimes, and it depends. If gender influences your choice of doctor–or, more likely, your chosen ob/gyn–it might say more about you than it does about your doc.
17-month-old Bronson Staker’s mom, Sara, only turned her back on her son in the tub for a minute. An older brother distracted her. Anyone with more than one kid knows this situation all too well. Yet, in just that moment, Sara turned back to find her child lying face down in the tub. At the hospital, Bronson was pronounced dead on arrival. A 2-year-old boy is recovering after four of the most dangerous needles embedded into his body were removed by surgeons in Brazil. The aforementioned needles were found in the boy’s lung and near his heart. His stepfather sits in jail for forcing the implements into his son.
The happiest doctors are those who treat kids and those who treat old people, according to a new study from the University of California Davis’ Center for Health Policy and Research. It found the highest levels of satisfaction from pediatric emergency room doctors and geriatricians, and the lowest from neurosurgeons and — wait for it — OB/GYNS.
Those low levels of satisfaction might come from a percieved lack of autonomy, irregualr hours and a relative decline in pay, according to the researchers. But Continue reading »
When my water broke at 4 a.m. a week before my due date, I called my OB right away.
“Are you sure it broke?” she asked.
“Uhhhh, yeah. Pretty sure.”
“I just saw you yesterday, and I told you that you wouldn’t be ready to go for at least another week.”
I contemplated and rejected at least three different responses before taking a very deep breath and saying, “Should I come to the hospital now or wait until my contractions start?”
“FINE. Come in,” she grumbled. My second daughter was born 12 hours later.

For those patients who are interested in such methods, please notify the nurse so we may arrange transfer of your care.
