Your Spouse’s Bad Habits Are Contagious
New research shows that your honey’s bad habits are affecting you more than you think. We’re not talking about how he leaves the toilet seat up or the way her shoes are always lying in the hallway.
We’re talking health habits. That second glass of wine. The bag of chips eaten on the couch after dinner. Deciding to skip working out in favor of a movie. What our spouse does, we’re more likely to do ourselves. We lead each other into temptation.
Actually, if we’re in a same-sex partnership, we lead each other into temptation. For straight couples, it’s nearly always the guys taking the lead and the ladies following.
A Diet Book for Preschoolers? Now I’ve Seen It All (Unfortunately)
And here I was thinking the worst four-letter D-word a 4 year old could utter was Damn. Turns out, I was wrong. (Damn.)
A new book is set to introduce preschoolers to an even more offensive word: Diet.
Maggie Goes On a Diet will be available this fall, and while it’s a book about a 14 year old girl who goes on a diet, Amazon is listing the reading level as appropriate for kids ages 4-8.
Put Down That Soda! Small Habits Cause Creeping Weight Gain
How much harm can one little soda do?
Turns out, it’s the little things that add up to a wider waistline. A new Harvard study shows that small habits add up to big weight gains over the long term. The study draws on data from over 100,000 people collected over a 20 year period.
The news from this massive study is really that there is no news. The big culprits for gradual weight gain aren’t surprising. Drinking soda every day will pack on the pounds. Ditto eating potato chips. Watching TV makes you gain weight, increasing your physical activity prompts you to lose it. Getting enough sleep is paramount.
Do Kids Make You Fat?
Moms of young kids weigh more than childless women, says a new study in the journal Pediatrics. Perhaps you’ve noticed this yourself in your own anecdotal studies on the playground? It’s not earth-shattering news. What is new here are some theories about what might be causing these weight differences between mothers and childless women. When we talk about mothers’ bodies, it’s often about how hard it is to lose the leftover baby weight. But it turns out those lingering pregnancy pounds may not be the only factor. According to this study, mothers of young children consume over 300 calories a day more than their peers who don’t have kids, and more empty ones. They’re also less likely to exercise regularly. This last part was true for both mothers and fathers.
Here’s how moms stacked up: Continue reading »
The Mediterranean Diet: Why It Is a Healthy Choice for the Whole Family
The Mediterranean diet continues to gain followers who are feasting on the healthy and delicious options featured in this way of eating. First, it should be noted that this is not a “diet” like the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet or the Adkins diet. It’s not an “I’m trying to lose weight” kind of thing. It’s a lifestyle. The Mediterranean diet embraces foods that have a slew of added benefits beyond being less packed with useless calories. Some of the benefits reportedly include: Continue reading »
Ab Cuts: Kendra Wilkinson’s Weight Loss “Magic Potion”
Kendra Wilkinson became a household name with the success of the E! reality series “Girls Next Door,” where she lived at the Playboy Mansion with Hugh Hefner and his other two Playboy bunny girlfriends. Kendra’s popularity earned her her own self-titled reality series, where it’s been no secret to her fans that she’s struggled to lose the 60-pounds she gained when pregnant with her baby, Hank Baskett IV.
Kendra is happy to announce that she’s lost all 60 pounds of the baby weight that plagued her Playboy bunny bod. She looks fabulous. And she’s chalking it up to what is quickly becoming another new household name: Ab Cuts.
In a recent interview with FOX 411’s Pop Tarts, Kendra says:
“Within the last couple of months I’ve been focusing on my metabolism with the health supplement Ab Cuts and it has been amazing, my magic potion! It’s the metabolism booster I needed.”
Here’s the skinny on Ab Cuts.
How to Lose Weight Fast: Use Obesity Soap to Wash Away Fat!
After Carolyn posted yesterday about Dr. Oz’s interview with Joe Mercola on the benefits of the supplement astaxanthin, there’s been a hot debate in the comments about whether Mercola is the modern-day equivalent of a snake-oil salesman. Babble readers have been quick to point out how drug companies, businesses, the media, and the medical community have essentially been shoving quick-fixes down people’s throats for years. Here’s a perfect example: Starting today, you can see a display at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. featuring diet books and diet advertisements through the ages, promising women that they will get fit and trim if they simply:
(Drumroll, please…)
• Eat bile beans (Yum!)
• Wear a girdle (Flatten that bulge, through thick and thin!)
• Listen to a record (Play this record daily and watch the pounds melt away!)
• Wear an electric massage belt (Shake off those pounds!)
• Use an obesity soap (Used like ordinary soap – absolutely harmless, never fails to reduce flesh when directions are followed!)
• Wear “Dissolvene” rubber garments (How society women are reducing flesh!)
• Reduce your weight by bathing (Use reduction salts and wash away your fat!)
