Pampers Markets Diapers to Dad
Men are reportedly changing more diapers, but are they buying them? Pampers, which has begun marketing to dads, is hoping the answer is “yes.”
According to The New York Times, the diaper company has begun to sponsor events for dads. Earlier this month, Pampers hosted a “Daddy Play Date” in Manhattan featuring celebrity dads like singer Joel Madden and actor Gilles Marini. Per the invitation, the idea behind the the carnival-themed event was to pay “homage to dads on diaper duty.”
Pampers’ Facebook page recently introduced a feature which asks dads to share parenting stories. In return, dads will become eligible for daily drawings of $250 diaper giveaways through June.
Why all the fuss over dads? “The role of dads is expanding and we salute that and we want to make dads a bigger part of the brand,” Bryan McCleary, a Pampers spokesman, told The New York Times. “Dads are playing an increasingly large role in parenting and diapering.” Continue reading »
Potty Humor Lands Huggies in a Time-Out (Video)
We’ve all seen the television commercials. A gorgeous model struts down the sidewalk in slow motion, showing off the latest fashion. Heads turn, until finally the model stops in front of a mirror and coos in a generic European accent, “I poo in blue.”
Okay, maybe you haven’t seen that commercial, in which the model, a two-year-old boy, is shilling the new denim diaper by Huggies. The 30-second spot ends with the visual tagline, “The coolest you’ll look pooping your pants.” Or, it does on some networks, anyway. The New York Times reports that ABC, ABC Family and Sprout “objected to screen text at the end of the spot that included the word ‘pooping,’ (so) for those networks, the text was changed to, ‘When you gotta go, go in style.’”
It seems odd to me that those networks, which air programming geared specifically toward families with children in diapers, would get uppity about a reference to poop. What’s even more bothersome, though, is that according to Newsweek, ABC flat-out refused to air a commercial for Lane Bryant featuring a plus-sized model showing “too much cleavage.” With so many female-centric shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Cougar Town and The View, do they just not understand that plus-sized moms are their demographic? Or maybe they just can’t comprehend the idea that a woman might be proud of her body, whatever its size, and willing to laugh at the bodily functions of her child. My guess is networks are afraid that if we’re okay with ourselves and our bodily functions, we might stop buying the stuff that hides all of that raw humanity. Continue reading »
Potty-training: What’s the Best Age?
How old is too old for diapers? Noelle Howey has a terrific article up on Babble today about her four-year-old son. He’s still in diapers, and both mother and child are cool with this.
Noelle expresses regret about the amount of landfill waste her son’s pull-ups produce, but otherwise she’s happy to let him poop in his pants until he’s good and ready to use the toilet.
Normally, I’m a crusader for more relaxed parenting. I’d love to see everyone lighten up about just about every aspect of it. Stop worrying so much about what your kids eat, when they sleep, how they learn, who they play with.
But this is one laissez-faire parenting move that just pushes my buttons. I liked Noelle’s piece, and her attitude suggests I’d love the way she raises her kids. Yet I’m going to have to respectfully urge everyone reading this not to follow her example.
Parents Sue Pampers Over Diaper Rash
Irate parents are suing Procter & Gamble Co, the company that manufactures Pampers, claiming that their diapers have caused severe rashes and other skin conditions on their children.
The company calls the claims “completely false,” according to Reuters, citing court documents.
The class action lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio on May 11, comes after parents complained that the updated Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers diapers with P&G’s new Dry Max technology were causing rashes and burns on their children. Continue reading »
Pampers to Complaining Parents: Chill, You Big Babies!
Pampers is dismissing the complaints of parents, via Facebook (and anywhere else they can find) that their new “Dry Max” diapers cause what one mom described as “the worst diaper rash ever.” Reports of chemical rashes, bleeding and welts abound online, but a Proctor and Gamble press release says, unequivocably, that any connection between its product and problem rashes is “completely false.” Why? Because all the shocking chemicals, etc., hidden away inside the absorbent diaper interior are exactly the same stuff you’ll find in any other disposable–including the discontinued products the Dry Max diapers displaced. Does that mean disposable diapers cause rashes? Nope.
Did Sexy Beckham Diaper Ad Go Too Far?
A diaper ad meant to mock a David Beckham Emporio Armani is getting plenty of attention – but it isn’t the type likely to sell overnight training pants for toddlers.
Parents are calling the Good-Nites ad featuring a little boy covered in sweat and perched on a rope as everything from pedophiliac to just plain weird.
As a fan of both David Beckham’s feet and parts, well, farther up the body, let’s just say I find the controversy to be a bit hotter than expected. Continue reading »
