Remember David?
You know whom I am talking about. I’m referring to the 2009 amateur video and YouTube sensation featuring seven-year-old David DeVore, fully out-of-it post dental surgery and mumbling a sickly hilarious series of non-sequitars including, infamously, “Is this real life?”
The DeVore’s have recently surfaced on the blog Business Insider, telling blogger/reporter William Wei they’ve now earned about $150,000 from the 2009 video and subsequent licensing. Their most recent deal: a contract to make medical scrubs for dentists. This follows such money making ventures as a Vizio Super Bowl ad and t-shirt sales. Continue reading »
Parents profiting off of a child's misery?
Last week in teeth-gnashing, we featured the video of Hannah, a crying 4-year-old whose mother recorded the girl’s anguish over moving to Japan. It’s a tough video to watch — I couldn’t find anything cute about it. And more than one commenter wondered what the mother was thinking sharing such a personal moment on YouTube.
Maybe she was thinking “David After Dentist,” the video of a seven-year-old still loopy from his trip to the dentist. Not everyone thought that video was cute, either. But who needs anonymous approval when two minutes from your child’s life can now pay for their college and then some.
How much, exactly?
In today’s post-Dooce world, it seems like everything our kids do is fodder for online entertainment. But even if they’re heartbreakingly cute, kids still deserve a little privacy. Take this poor kiddo, upset that her family’s upcoming move to Japan would separate her from Stephen, 15-year-old love of her life.
The kids are in the backseat are all rocking out to Beyonce’s oft-covered hit when Dad jokingly tells his son he’s not a single lady. Like you do. But the poor little guy took it personally, and started bawling. Kind of adorably bawling, actually. Thus a viral YouTube sensation was born.
Even better, CBS invited the whole family onto national TV, where their adorable boy got to sing a a bit of Single Ladies solo.
David DeVore has extended his 15 minutes of fame to 13 months…and pocketed a boatload of cash. Remember him? Devore is the guy who recorded his seven-year-old son post-dental surgery, sparking a YouTube phenomenon.
A kid looking stoned after a trip to the dentist may have been the top meme of 2009, but David After Dentist is looking to exact his revenge in 2010.
