I cheered when I read Monica Bielanko’s article basically telling “urban hipster doofuses” to get over themselves and stop whining about the baby on their flight that might (ohmygosh) act like a baby and cry. She goes on to explain that the parents of that baby are far more stressed than anyone else on that flight.
Well, parents on a recent U.S. Airways flight from Ft. Lauderdale to Phoenix didn’t have to worry about calming their crying children. No one on that flight would’ve noticed any unruly kids because they were too busy staring at this guy.
An elderly man, dressed in a spicy little number consisting of woman’s underwear with thigh high stockings and heels was allowed to fly. I mean, I can see if he was wearing a tasteful pink chiffon evening gown, but a bikini-like outfit? Apparently U.S. Airways’ dresscode only states that a passenger cannot be inappropriately clothed. As long as a passenger’s private parts aren’t exposed, they’re allowed to fly. Really? That’s it? It’s fine to fly in underwear? That leaves a whole lot of room for “interesting” ensembles.
In Afghanistan, boys have much more freedom than girls
If you think it’s challenging to raise girls in this country, you might spare a thought for parents of daughters in Afghanistan, where giving birth to a daughter, rather than a son, is — sadly, terribly, horribly — considered a failure on her parents’ part, and where girls are deprived of many of the freedoms granted to boys.
A fascinating piece in Tuesday’s New York Times examines a startling practice that has grown out of this sad state of affairs: parents who dress their girls as boys, passing them off as sons for years until they reach puberty. Continue reading »
Back in the age of the dinosaurs, aka 1995, I went to prom with a charming young man. I wore a long, lacy purple dress. He wore a black miniskirt and a baby-doll t-shirt with the words “Prom Queen” stencilled across the chest in frilly lavender script. Guess which one of us got to dance with the captain of the football team? Hint: it wasn’t me.
I guess we were trendsetters, because the New York Times now reports that schools are cracking down on kids’ cross-dressing to proms – or just to class. Are these teens finding a clever new way to stick it to the dress code, or just exploring their honest gender expression? Does it matter?
17-year-old O’Rhonde Chapman likes to wear jumbo gold hoop earrings, long flowing wigs and stiletto heels. So what’s the big deal? To the school administrators of Nimitz High School in Texas, it’s the fact that O’Rhonde was born a “he”. Unhappy with his attire, the school principal recently sent him home.
Remember Jonathan Escobar, the teen boy who was asked to dress more manly or be homeschooled? A few commenters wondered what would happen if roles were reversed: If Jonathan was a girl trying to dress like a boy, would school officials still have a problem with it?
In Wesson, Mississippi, the answer to that question is yes.
Jonathan Escobar is the kind of kids who stands out from the crowd, especially when he wears his pink wig. Escobar prefers to wear wigs, makeup, and feminine-style clothing, a style choice that’s gotten him in trouble at school. Continue reading »
