Crib safety under scrutiny
A study in the journal Pediatrics this week finds that nearly 10,000 children under two are seriously injured every year in cribs, bassinets, and playpens. The 19-year study found that cribs accounted for 83 percent of the injuries and that falls were responsible for two-thirds of the incidents.
One in five injuries was a head injury such as a concussion that did not break the skin. The injuries were enough to send 26 kids to the ER every day and cause 110 deaths a year.
Baby products have come under closer scrutiny in the last few years. For example, the FDA recently recommended that parents stop using sleep positioners due to suffocation risk. And in December of last year the Consumer Products Safety Commission set new safety standards for cribs (the first new crib standards to be set in two decades) — those go into effect later this year, getting rid of drop-sided cribs, for example.
According to a separate New York Times article on crib safety this week, since 2007 more than 10 million cribs have been recalled.

Is the ban coming soon?
Nearly 90,000 more drop-side cribs have been recalled in the United States. This time the recall involves the Bassettbaby crib sold in popular baby retailers through August of this year.
The crib, like many other drop side cribs that have already been recalled pose the risk of strangulation, or suffocation to infants. The drop-side portion of the crib can malfunction causing dangerous space between the railings and the mattress, which a child can become trapped.
Parents are advised to immediately stop using this crib, and order the repair kit through the manufacturer Bassettbaby. Parents can also call 1-800-308-7485 for information on obtaining the repair kit to fix the dangerous problem.
Unfortunately for parents and children all over the country, drop-side cribs have been getting a bad rap, rightfully so. Since they became popular there have been a number of recalls prompted by injured children, and many don’t think it will be long before the cribs are pulled off the market altogether or banned from being sold. Fox news isn’t the most reputable source of information, but a recent report on co-sleeping highlights some interesting data. In Milwaukee county, 100 percent of co-sleeping deaths have involved formula fed babies.
Drop-side cribs are “deadly hazards” linked to the deaths of at least 32 infants since January 2000, according to U.S. regulators who plan to ban the drop-crib design.
C&T International/Sorelle recalled 170,000 cribs yesterday after reports of bruising and abrasions.
Over the past five years, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced 11 recalls for more than 7 million drop-side beds according to a statement today. They are investigating several manufacturers for crib-design hazards. Continue reading »
On the heels of last week’s recall of over 200,000 Graco cribs, now-defunct Simplicity cribs are once again being recalled after the death of a child.
It seems that every day there is a new report about dangerous or faulty products for kids that are being recalled.
The U.S. Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is targeting Simplicity cribs as a particular danger. In 2008, a Massachusetts toddler suffocated after getting stuck between the mattress and the frame. Another 13 incidents have been reported involving the tubular metal framed cribs bending or coming apart. Continue reading »
Graco is recalling about 217,000 cribs over concerns that they could strangle, suffocate or trap an infant or toddler.
The recall focuses on drop-side wooden cribs manufactured by LaJobi. The cribs were sold under the Graco brand between February 2007 and now.
Most pediatric experts like to discourage parents from co-sleeping with their children. They say it’s unsafe: the bedding is a suffocation risk. The kid could fall off the bed or become trapped between the edge and the wall. A crib, they insist, is the best place for a baby to sleep.
Still, what’s more soothing than nodding off next to your warm and loving Mom or Dad?
Bringing together the best of both worlds are crib co-sleepers.
