Nine-Year-Olds Remember the 2000s

Here’s a video that’s sure to make you feel old.

As we approach the New Year, Vimeo user Allison Louie-Garcia has asked kids born in the year 2000 to look back on the last decade. Their fears about war and terrorism sadly bring the violence of the last decade into focus, but the questions are mostly light-hearted.

Asked, for instance, about the first time they used a computer, the kids say things like, “I think it was just around my second birthday.”  Asked to identify Britney Spears, one kid says, “Isn’t that the girl that cut her hair bald?” And wait ’till you hear what they think the sound of a dial-up connection is.

2801521602 e288da164c m Here Be Dragons: Where Your Kids are on the InternetMy five-year-old recently used some of her carefully hoarded birthday money to buy herself a Webkinz. She generously bought one for her little sister, too. The girls have spent the past week naming, cuddling and grooming this fluffy stuffed critters. They’ve made collars and bracelets and hats for them, all with matching sparkly beads and ribbon.

Luckily for me, I don’t think either girl has realized yet that there’s a Webkinz website where they can extend their play into the Intertubes. It’s only a matter of time, though. Continue reading »

computer injury 0608 300x168 They Say: Computer Injuries on the RiseBlogger (and blog-reader) parents should find this little stat important – computer-related injuries are on the rise, and those injuries are disproportionately happening to kids under the age of 5.

Every year, 9,300 people in the United States suffer a computer related injury sufficient to send them to the emergency room. We’re not talking carpal tunnel and eyestrain here, we’re talking things like cuts, bruises, torn muscles and the like.
