Is our school system's preoccupation with testing stressing out our kids?
“Race to Nowhere” is a small-budget documentary that was released last September which poses questions that would make any self-respecting Tiger Mom shake her head in disgust. But to many parents, the film’s premise really hits home. Could it be that our school systems are so preoccupied with testing and measuring that they’re creating angst-ridden children who are crumbling under the stress? Who deem anything less than the 99th percentile a failure?
Is humiliation apt punishment for chronic bad grades?
I feel bad for Tampa, Fla., mom Ronda Holder. She’s out of ideas, doesn’t know how to motivate her son and is scared that if he doesn’t get it together, he — like her — won’t finish high school.
I feel bad for Holder’s son, James Mond III, too. He had to stand on a Tampa street-corner wearing a cardboard sign around his neck.

Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey is an NYU drop out.
How would you feel if your child didn’t want to go to college?
Jack Dorsey, the inventor of Twitter is pretty lucky his parents didn’t force him to finish his degree. A student at NYU, he dropped out of college to start a web business based on an idea he had since he was 15 years old.
Would you forsake your child’s education if they thought they could make a living from tweets? Before you answer just look at what Bill Gates and Steve Jobs have accomplished without a college degree.

This is the time of year that makes die-hard frugal people squirm. All that food for one day — one meal! The decorations, the energy inefficient lights. It seems that higher education may be the only business that’s currently recession-proof. According to a survey released by the College Board, tuition at 4-year private colleges spiked 4.4% this year to over $26,000. Students at public institutions got an even bigger hit: up 6% for both in-state and out-of state students, to over $7,000 and $18,000 respectively.
