Tobacco makers are suing to prevent these graphic labels from being added to packaging.
“The primary complaint is that we think it violates the First Amendment for the government to require people who produce a lawful product to essentially urge prospective purchasers not to buy it,” says Floyd Abrams, a prominent First Amendment case expert who’s representing the plaintiffs. The plaintiffs include R.J. Reynolds, Lorillard, Commonwealth, Liggett, and Santa Fe Natural Tobacco.
Yeah! Why should the tobacco industry be regulated or held to any standards?! Why should their product be called out for killing people if other products aren’t called out for the ways in which they harm people? Why would anyone need to be told not to smoke around their kids?
First of all, who still smokes cigarettes? I mean, really? Don’t we all know by now how filthy and disgusting and treacherous they are?
Second of all, who possibly smokes cigarettes around kids? Kill yourself however you want, but your kids, too? Really?
Kudos to New York Assemblyman David Weprin, who announced a couple of days ago that he’ll be pushing for new legislation in his homes state that makes it illegal for adults to smoke in cars if kids under 14 are present.
One more reason to give up cigarettes, mamas. A new study shows that secondhand smoke exposure may cause ADHD, depression, anxiety and other behavioral disorders in kids.
The study looked at over 3,000 children and found that those with the highest levels of secondhand smoke chemicals in their bloodstreams were more likely to exhibit behavioral and mental health issues. The link with ADHD was especially strong.
The study isn’t enough to definitively prove a link between mental health issues and second-hand smoke, but it provides strong-enough evidence that researchers said it would be “a surprise” if the link were not proven by follow-up research.

While the size of this recent study done by the American Association for Cancer Research was small in size; only including 79 U.S. children, between the ages of one month, to ten years old – the findings are alarming for all parents. A bill under consideration by the New York State Assembly would ban adults from smoking in a car with kids.
The idea is to stop parents from imposing their second-hand smoke on kids. In theory, it’s a good idea. But is the ban enforceable? And does it violate civil rights?
If the legislation passes, it would be illegal for occupants of a car to smoke if there are children in the car younger than 14, according to The New York Times.

Remember the “smoking toddler,” the two-year-old Indonesian boy who became an international sensation last month when a video circulated of him chain-smoking?
People were universally outraged at the sight, even more so when they learned that the boy’s father first gave him cigarettes when he was only 18 months old.
Good news: according to The Sun, Ardi Rizal has cut down his habit to 15 cigarettes a day from the 40 he had been smoking.
A child welfare official told The Sun that the child’s addiction is being treated with “therapy focused on playing.”

Some folks call it a hookah, but it’s also known as a water pipe, shisha, narghile or hubble bubble. One thing’s for sure: whatever you call it, it’s gaining in popularity — especially among teens and young adults.
A new survey, published yesterday in the journal Pediatrics, confirmed that as many as 23 percent of young people in North America have used a hookah. That’s nearly 1 in 4 young adults.
Once only available at Middle Eastern cafes, hookahs are popping up all over, including small towns and Internet cafes, according to MSNBC.com.
And now that tobacco use is frowned on, teens get the false impression that hookahs are not only safe, but sorta cool. Continue reading »
