April 5th is a big day for Toms Shoes. They have deemed it “One Day Without Shoes” Day.
Now if you aren’t familiar with the casual canvas slip-on shoes, this day is supposed to help with that. The ideals of the company come off as very noble. For every pair of shoes you buy, a pair is sent to a child in a developing country, counties where children have never had their own shoes and where they are more likely to get infections and disease without proper protection for their feet. Holiday wishes became real through the Blogess' efforts
The Bloggess, famous for her off-color rants on everything from snakes to sex, has struck gold with her holiday giving scheme.
Initially, Jenny Lawson (a.k.a. The Bloggess), planned to give away 20 $30 Amazon gift cards to readers. Jenny’s a big softie underneath her humorous exterior, and often on her surface. Her post said she was about to ruin our image of her, but her readers know she’ll go the extra mile to help people in need.
So will they. As comments rolled in sharing stories of family need, others chimed in to offer help. Soon, The Bloggess was managing a spreadsheet to distribute $39,000 worth of gifts coming in from readers, being given to other readers.

Do you know a deserving family in your day-to-day life that you want to help out? With the economy the way it has been in recent years, I think we all know that family. Two years ago this was my family.
November rolled around and as the banks were starting to tank alongside the auto industry and virtually everything else my husband brought home a pink slip. Laid off after working hard with a company for 18 months straight. We knew because of the line of work he was in that this was a possibility, but we kept ignoring it because we never thought it would happen to us. Then his company closed their doors completely. Around our house, we never need an excuse to eat ice cream, but we’re trying hard to keep treats to special occasions. Baskin-Robbins 31 Cent Scoop Night is the perfect occasion to enjoy a family trip to the ice cream shop and to support our local heroes at the same time.
Baskin Robbins 31 Cent Scoop Night is held in honor of America’s firefighters, and The Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation will donate $100,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28th (that’s tomorrow!), participating Baskin-Robbin stores will dish up ice cream for 31 cents a scoop. At some locations, local firefighters will be on hand, and customers will get a chance to donate directly to local charities.
Good cause, good ice cream, all for under a dollar a cone. Sign me up! Visit the Baskin-Robbins website for a participating store near you.

As part of his school’s Blankets for Babies project, 16-year-old Darryl Currie knits beautiful blankets for children living at Our Ladies Inn shelter for pregnant women in St. Louis. Around the time their daughter receives her fourteenth Barbie, charity-minded parents will most likely be searching for an alternative birthday celebration plan. ECHOage, a web-based service that plans eco-friendly, charitable birthday parties for kids may be the way to go.
An international collaboration of writers, photographers, painters, sculptors and crafters has come together for a unique auction with proceeds headed to help children in earthquake-hit Haiti.
The weeklong auction begins this morning and is organized by artist Rene Joshi Sims of fruityfantasia and Kate Inglis, the writer behind Sweet/Salty and the children’s book, The Dread Crew, Pirates of the Backwoods. The proceeds go to the St. Joseph’s Family of Homes in Haiti, a relief organization for impoverished children. The Canadian government will match all donations through the end of the week.
From the web site: René first heard of Wings of Hope via the Canada for Haiti telethon on January 22, 2010. The fragile and extraordinary children on screen reminded her of her son and the many children she knows in the special needs community. She has no money and a garage full of art and thought others might be in the same boat. “I emailed Kate, Kate emailed everyone else, and voilà. Here we all are, with so much to offer,” she says.
