Could your toddler call for help if something happened to you?
This story kinds of shamed me. My kid is 2-years-old. Hell, she’s almost three and there is no way she would be able to use my cell to call for help.
But according to Jezebel.com, that’s exactly what happened when Larissa Taylor had a seizure and stopped breathing.
Somehow, her 2-year-old daughter Lia was able to call her grandmother and tell her what happened.
Bobbie Gonzalez couldn’t believe what she heard when she answered her phone.
“It was Lia and she said, ‘My mom fell down,’ I said, ‘Let me talk to your mom,’ and she said, ‘She won’t wake up.’” Gonzalez called 911 and went over to the house. Thing is, Lia had never been taught to use the phone. Continue reading »

Are Millennials entitled or just self-assured?
If there’s one thing I can’t stand it’s a loud talker. Particularly someone who is yelling into their cell phone as if we’re all super impressed by their fascinating conversation.
I notice this a lot among the very old and the younger crowd. This is the part where I age myself, because I wasn’t raised on cell phones. Millennials, however, have likely owned cells since they hit junior high. Some even younger.
I can excuse the old folks for loud talking because, well, God bless ‘em for even jumping on the cell phone bandwagon in the first place. If yelling helps them acclimate, so be it. And when’s the last time you heard an oldster OMG-ing and LIKE, NO WAY-ing into a cell? Continue reading »

How did we manage before cell phones?
When we think about cell phones and our kids, we generally worry about only a few things. There’s the exposure to radiation that some believe may cause cancer. There’s the very real fear that they will talk or text while driving and have an automobile accident. And there’s the more general concern that our kids’ cell phone habits might be preventing them from enjoying face-to-face relationships in the real world.

Yes, I know what you’re thinking — how could anyone write anything of substance, let alone an entire novel, on the tiny little keyboard of a cellphone? I’m not sure, but people are doing it and one Japanese fifteen-year-old has made more than half a million dollars doing it.

In 2005, the Kaiser Family Foundation concluded that kids’ use of entertainment media had hit a ceiling. There just weren’t any more hours in a day for kids to be using technology, they said. So researchers were shocked to discover in a recent survey that media usage among kids has actually increased by an hour a day in the last five years.
The New York Times already did the math for us. If you’re kids aren’t in school or sleeping, chances are they’re using some sort of entertainment media.
