Alicia Keys welcomes baby Egypt
Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz recently welcomed baby boy Egypt. Like a lot of other celebrities, the couple was clearly looking to give their child an unusual, distinctive name.
According to Famecrawler, Keys was inspired by her time spent in Egypt while “searching for inspiration for her new album, a record produced by Swiss Beatz.” Talking about the month she spent on her own in Egypt, Keys said, “it gave me a new sense of power, freedom, creativity, and limitlessness.”

You’d think people who want to give their kids unusual names wouldn’t really care about what Zuma or Suri or Nahla mean. You’d think!
But Today Translation is hoping some people will care enough to shell out $1,700 to be reassured that they are not giving their kids weird names in any language other than English.
Hollywood’s done pretty well balancing obsessive originality with the world’s languages, though the service did find a few red flags regarding everybody’s favorite mini-Scientologist.
The worst baby name I’ve ever seen was given to a child in my former school district. Pronounced NAH-sma-king and spelled Nosmoking, it chosen for the first thing the mother saw after giving birth: The no smoking sign on the wall of her hospital room.
Seriously. There’s not even a cute nickname there: Nos? Nossie? Smokie? King?
In their book Bad Baby Names authors Michael Sherrod and Matthew Rayback pay homage to all the babies destined to be ridiculed on the playground and the parents who name them. Using the U.S. Census Bureau as their guide, they’ve come up with an impressive list of names that should be banned from birth certificates everywhere.

Sparrow?? Seriously? Are you kidding me?? Sparrow? Sparrow James Midnight Madden? I know Nicole Ritchie is just another one of those dim-bulb “why is she famous again” ridiculous faux-celebrities, but seriously, naming a child Sparrow is just. not. nice.
I can’t imagine she’s the most culturally literate person on the planet and I have no idea who her husband even is, but does she know that a sparrow is a little beige and brown bird and is a frequent metaphor for someone who is drab and humble? Sheesh.
