Teen parents or celebrity moms?
The grocery store where I shop has a checkout line that has been deemed “family friendly.” What this means, of course, is that there are no magazines or candies displayed next to the register. That’s a nice idea, but ultimately kind of worthless. Because no matter what line you stand on, the stuff you are trying to avoid is never more than a few feet away.
And what I am trying to avoid is the magazines. Saying no to candy is easy. But I resent having to explain to my fourth grader what a Snooki is and why she’s famous. Ditto for Brad allegedly cheating on Angelina and Paris Hilton’s supposed drug bust. My daughter doesn’t even know who these people are, but thanks to these prominently displayed tabloids, she thinks she knows what they did to get famous. Continue reading »
Jackie Evancho is a beautiful little girl with a beautiful big voice. The ten-year-old’s performance Tuesday on America’s Got Talent blew away the judges and earned her a standing ovation from the audience. Watch it for yourself and you’ll see why:
Remember mom pants? Those high-waisted, narrow legged slacks that were so popular a few decades ago? We wore them back then because we didn’t have much of a choice. That’s just what pants looked like. We certainly didn’t know they were ugly and would someday take their place alongside parachute pants and off-the-shoulder sweaters as examples of what was wrong with 80′s fashion.
But even into the 90′s and beyond, some of us of a certain age continued to wear mom pants. Mom pants are comfortable and perfect for reigning in that extra girth that so often remains after childbirth. Maybe they aren’t fashion forward, but at least they don’t cause the unsightly muffin top that even thin girls get when wearing those tight, low-rise pants that barely conceal their underpants. Just as the book Queen Bees and Wannabees inspired the film Mean Girls, Rosalind Wiseman’s sequel, Queen Bee Moms and Kingpin Dads, is behind the idea for a Mean Girls follow-up titled Mean Moms. Now I’m gonna go to bed tonight chanting, “Please cast Lindsay Lohan as the mother. Please cast Lindsay Lohan as the mother.” Not the nice mother, but the mean mommy who projects her anger onto other people because she doesn’t love her husband or herself, so she has a tiny coke habit she indulges while the kids are at soccer. Twitter is like this huge cocktail party full of famous people and not-so-famous people all rubbing elbows and saying pithy things in 140 characters. This week, the spotlight is on Kelly Oxford, a Canadian mom whose acerbic comments on parenting and pop culture have won her over 20,000 followers on Twitter.
The woman doesn’t have a blog, or an album she’s peddling. She’s just funny. And smoking hot. According to her latest tweet:
When you’re given the face of a porn star and the personality of Woody Allen, human interaction is a Kubrickian cat’s-cradle.
That seems to about sum her up. I’m a little confused about the attention she’s getting though, because with all due respect to Ms. Oxford, I hang out with some really funny moms on Twitter.
I’ve always felt that the number one job of a parent, especially in the first dozen years or so of their lives, is to keep the kids alive. We don’t let them play in the middle of the street, we make sure they wear helmets, and we don’t let them eat laundry detergent (much). We teach them to blow on their soup, how to climb a tree safely, and perhaps even how to defend themselves if necessary. Everything we do is part and parcel of taking care of our kids and keeping them safe and secure and parents — good parents, anyway — take that charge very seriously. So why would any parent sit by and watch their child die?
