The Centers for Disease Control’s National Youth Risk Behavior Survey monitors the health risk behaviors of children and young adults in the U.S. The 2009 report was released this week and the results reveal interesting trends and at least one frightening new statistic.
The good news is that teens seem to be more health conscious than ever. As compared to previous surveys, fewer reported drinking soda and more are eating fruit. Extreme dieting tactics such as fasting, taking diet pills and laxatives as well as intentional vomiting are also on the wane. Dog bites are the fifth most common injury that sends kids to the ER, and dog bites — including those that don’t necessitate a trip to the hospital — affect a whopping 4.7 million people a year.
To create awareness, the CDC has declared May 17-23 National Dog Bite Prevention Week. The good news is that dog bite injuries among children seem to be decreasing, but the CDC reminds parents that children age 5 to 9 are at the highest risk of dog-related injury, and that having two ore more dogs in your home increases that risk 5-fold.

According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recent World Report on Child Injury Prevention, more than 25% of all accidental injury deaths among children are due to drowning. While the majority of these occur in low-income and middle-income countries, drowning remains the second leading cause of injury death of children in the United States. The percentage of parents who refused or delayed vaccinations for their children rose sharply in the past decade, according to a study presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in Vanacouver on Tuesday.
Nearly 40 percent of parents refused or delayed vaccinations for their kids in 2008, up from 22 percent in 2003, according to the study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the University of Rochester and the National Opinion Research Center.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from the 2008 National Immunization Survey, which asked nearly 9,000 parents of children 19 months-35 months if they had delayed or refused a vaccine, and if so, why. Continue reading »
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest report on birth rates in the United States reveals that overall, the numbers are dropping. The 4.2 million babies born in 2008 represent a 2 percent drop over the previous year and the first time the annual birth rate has declined since the beginning of this decade.
Experts point to two possible explanations for this drop: Immigration and economics. With fewer people coming to the U.S., fewer babies are being born. But for those already in the U.S., it would seem that money — or lack thereof — is playing a large role in family planning.
But surprisingly, there is one group who bucked the trend and defied economic insecurities: Women over 40. Continue reading »
Ever since Ricki Lake’s movie, “The Business of Being Born,” was released in 2008, home birth has been the subject of news stories and trend pieces, heated discussions and dire warnings from M.D.s. The film was influential to be sure. It brought home birth out from the fog of burning sage and into the clean-aired living rooms of Brooklyn apartment dwellers. It also influenced more than one woman to go the at-home route for childbirth.
But Lake’s movie can’t take all the credit (or blame, I suppose. Depends on your attitude). At the time the movie was released, home birth had already begun to reverse an almost 15-year steady decline, according to research coming out of the the Centers for Disease Control. Continue reading »
