The Cat in the Hat is among Dr. Seuss' most famous works
Dr. Seuss, or Theodor Seuss Geisel, would have been 107 on Wednesday, March 2nd. In honor of his birthday, here’s an essential reading list of 10 of his greatest hits that you should be sure to read (and re-read and re-read and re-read and re-read) with your kids:
1. Green Eggs and Ham
Sam I Am and your kids will likely agree – there’s not much to like about green eggs and ham at first, but there’s little doubt the book will be devoured time and again.
2. The Cat in the Hat
Think you have a little gremlin at home? Keep in mind that it could always be worse! Leave your kids home alone at your own risk, especially if there’s a chance you have a Cat in the Hat in your neighborhood.
3. The Thinks You Can Think
Give your kids’ imaginations carte blanche to run wild. “Oh the thinks you can think up if only you try.”

This Wednesday is the birthday of the great Dr. Seuss, and Seussville is gearing up for the red-letter day. The legendary children’s author would turn 107 if he were still around. And he would likely celebrate the occasion by composing a silly rhyme filled with the perfect blend of real words and made-up ones.
But it’s more than just his wacky rhymes that made Dr. Seuss the icon that he is. It’s also the appeal those rhymes have had upon generations and generations of young readers. There has never been anyone more influential for literary little ones than the great doctor. And there likely never will be. But why?
Are children’s book authors’ lives as squeaky clean as the tales they crank out to bookstores? The other day, I misplaced my better nature and took to the Internet for some research. As it turns out, even the authors of some of the most endearing and cherished children’s classics kept some sordid secrets that didn’t make it on the bio page.
Aesop
The granddaddy of kid’s lit, Aesop’s Fables (like “The Tortoise and the Hare” and “The Ant and the Grasshopper”), ensured him adoration for hundreds of generations. Too bad everyone back in the 6th century B.C. hated his guts.
Who knew there was a Cat in the Hat more annoying than Mike Myers’ whiny version? For anyone who thinks a little thing like science shouldn’t get in the way of a good time, you’re fine.
But for the rest of us, good news! They’re updating the old Cat in the Hat visit to space book – so while he might lead Sally and Dick astray in the original for decades to come, the Dr. Seuss knock-off won’t be teaching another generation that Pluto is a planet. Continue reading »
