Most of us reading this have been hearing the phrase “mommy track” at least since beginning our careers, if not longer. As a refresher, the term refers, somewhat derisively, to the idea that employees, especially female ones, could follow the typical workaholic American track if that was their desire, and women who want a little more work-life balance could have flextime, job sharing, part-time work, and so on. The idea was posited by Felice Schwartz in a 1999 article in Harvard Business Review, which was prompted by the idea that companies were losing talented women because of their inflexibility.

Yesterday, Bethany Sanders wrote about Nell Casey’s article wherein she explained that she earns more than her husband and admitted to using it, on occasion, to get out of parenting duties. Many families today need both parents to work, just to make ends meet, and yet, many women still find themselves doing the lion’s share of the work at home. But the home is not the same as it once was and marriage is not the same. These days, it falls upon both parents to both bring home the bacon and to fry it up in a pan — at least it should.
According to a survey taken by the Pew Research Center, almost two-thirds of working mothers would rather work part-time than full-time. Fathers, on the other hand, overwhelmingly — almost four out of five — prefer to work full time. Even putting the Monday morning “I-don’-wanna-go-work” feeling aside, these statistics surprise me in that I would expect far more parents would want to cut back on their work schedule in favor of spending time with their kids.
Anita Tedaldi has written much about her family of five biological daughters. Despite a gaggle of children, Tadaldi felt here was room in her and her husband’s lives to adopt an additional child. The South American boy, referred to as “Baby D”, had been found by the side of the road. If anyone needed a family, it was he.
But after a year and a half, Tedaldi returned him.
Okay, maybe that’s a little coarse, but you tell me. Tadaldi went on the “Today” show and cited the baby’s inability to bond with her as the issue.

Quick, hide the kids! If your boss knows you’re a working mom, you’re likely to be making less than your non-mom counterparts. A LOT less.
A new study found the wage disparity between mothers and non-breeders could be as much as $11,000 for the same position (per year). Providing fake resumes to employers for two women – one with kids, one without – the researchers working on a study since dubbed “Getting a Job: Is There a Motherhood Penalty?” found moms were ranked as both “less competent” and “less committed.” Continue reading »
