The news of Elizabeth Edwards’ death has truly shocked and saddened the nation. Even while battling breast cancer, Edwards was the driving force behind her estranged husband’s 2008 presidential bid and a great advocate for universal health care. Most importantly, though, she was the loving mother of three children, along with her son Wade, who died in a car accident in 1996 at 16 years old. Edwards had been steadily preparing her young children to deal with her passing, but the death of a parent is not something one can prep for, like a test. At any age, the loss of a parent is a shock to the system that takes years to recover from. Continue reading »

My family doesn’t have much in common with the Edwards family. My parents were mild mannered professors who avoided the spotlight. And though my dad was once head of the German Department, he was never a Senator. Nor, for that matter, did he ever run for President. And sure, there may have been a fight or two along the way, but my parents never separated. There was no highly publicized affair. Or any affair, for that matter.
But tonight, my heart goes out to the Edwards clan for the things my family does have in common with them—the things that all families have in common with them. Love and mortality.

Have a history of breast cancer, or ovarian cancer in your father’s family? While some medical professionals would have passed this by in the past, new research out of Toronto is showing us including this in a woman’s medical history when screening for these cancers can be very helpful.
As a woman with serious reproductive cancers on my fathers side of the family, this is something I have automatically assumed since genetics can be included when it comes to serious cancer, but I never in a million years thought this was not common practice. Continue reading »
A recent study shows that a small majority of parents want to pull money out of their wallets and light it on fire. Not literally. But lighting money on fire would at least save a trip to Walgreens.
In a poll of nearly 1,500 parents, 53 percent said they would be interested in at-home genetic tests for their kids. These parents said they’d like to know whether their children are at an increased, average or low-risk for developing certain cancers and other diseases so that they might work on preventing them. That over 1.5 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2010 is a horrifying statistic. And the fact that many of those diagnosed will be children and young adults is downright depressing. It’s used in everything from candy to soup to salad dressings to fruit roll-ups. Now a new report says that food coloring poses cancer risks, hyperactivity in kids, and allergies.
Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6, the three most widely used dyes, have known carcinogens, according to a new report by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), the same group that is threatening to sue McDonald’s over Happy Meals. The Food and Drug Administration has previously acknowledged that the dye Red 3, is a carcinogen, yet it is still widely used.
