A new report out of California highlights an alarming trend in the U.S.: Maternal mortality rates have tripled in the state in the last 10 years.
Still a relatively rare event, up from 5.6 out of 100,000 women to 16.9 per 100,000 women, experts also say that the reasons that women die during or in the six weeks following childbirth are mostly preventable: hemorrhage, blood clots, and underlying heart disease.
So why does the U.S. rank so low in maternal health, behind over 40 other countries? That’s a big questions experts are trying to answer.
In our house, it’s simply “The Trial”. My brother-in-law, who follows such things, says that this is probably the biggest case in the last 40 years. It will very likely affect every state in the nation and will either affirm or weaken the constitution, depending on the outcome. And whatever the outcome, in another twenty years’ time, it will almost certainly be moot, except as a chapter in high school civics books. The Trial, of course, is the case of Perry et al v. Schwarzenegger et al, also known as the federal challenge to California’s Proposition 8.

If your boss came to you and told you that you had to take a class to learn how to do your job better and that the company would pay for it, would you say no? What if your manager said that if you didn’t complete the training, you would be fired? I’m pretty sure that I’d go ahead and take the class. Not everyone, however, feels the same way.
A school district in San Joaquin County, California told all its teachers that they needed to be trained in techniques to better teach students who were not fluent in English — about 20% of California students. This instruction is part of the standard education for new teachers, but those who received their credential prior to 2003 may not have covered this information. Theresa Messick of Ripon High School is one such veteran teacher.

Doug Manchester, the California businessman “who helped finance the 2008 fight against same-sex marriage in California” is getting a divorce, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.
The paper says that the divorce could “complicate Manchester’s finances” and possibly give him trouble in a major development project on the San Diego waterfront. Continue reading »

A new bill has been introduced in California to do away with the state’s demand that manufacturers load cribs, strollers, changing tables and more with fireproofing.
