Most of us would love an extra day off. For me, that would almost be preferable to an equivalent amount of money as a bonus — while I’m always short of money (I do have three kids, after all), I’m even more short on time. But an extra day off may not be the best idea if it comes every week and if it means putting in extra hours each day to make up the time. That’s hard enough to do as an adult, but as a child it’s got to be near impossible. And yet, some school districts are making kids stick it out for an extra hour and a half each day in order to switch to a four day school week.
Summer camp is a great way to keep kids entertained and out of trouble in the summer months, but in today’s economy, luxuries like camp are often the first thing to go.
Joan Brackin, a 64-year-old grandmother of nine from Grant City, MO, has come up with a solution for her family. According to the Los Angeles Times, Brackin takes in all of her grand-kids for a full week every summer and holds “Grandma Camp.”
My oldest daughter just turned seven, and the weeks before her birthday were filled with invitation angst. She wanted a party at the local pottery painting place, but at the same time didn’t want to leave any friends out.
At $16 a kid, we told her she had two choices: We could trim the guest list way back, or plan a different kind of party.
For us, a $200 birthday party would have been extravagant, while for others it’s $2,000. But according to MSNBC, the recession has parents at every income level lowering the budget on their kids’ birthday parties.
