Breastfeeding advocates in the U.K. are asking doctors and midwives to quit saying “breast is best.” No, this isn’t the clandestine work of formula companies, rather, the work of an organization that hopes to change how people think about breastfeeding.
Leslie Backhouse, chair of the Breastfeeding Network, a campaign to promote breastfeeding, says “breast is best” sends a very wrong message. She told the BBC “We’ve got to knock breastfeeding off this pedestal.”

Here’s an interesting twist in the battle between breastmilk and formula, staging ground: Haiti.
A U.S. reservist, sent to the island just after the earthquake three weeks ago, pumps her breasts a few times a day and sends the bottled milk to USS Comfort. The ship is a floating hospital anchored just off of Port-au-Prince. Among its patients are babies who were injured in the quake and it’s those babies who are getting what milk Coast Guard Lieutenant Teresa Wolf has supplied.

Go over and read Tracy Clark-Flory’s excellent post on Salon‘s Broadsheet about whether or not we should be donating baby formula to Haiti. She describes a dust-up via Twitter after calls to donate formula were met with pleas not to.
Tweeted a Long Beach, Calif., doula and a Canadian breastfeeding activist respectively: “Please don’t send powdered formula to Haiti!” and “PLEASE! don’t send formula to Haiti! The women&children shouldn’t be victimised twice! Breastfeeding during emergencies is VITAL to health.” Continue reading »

An evolutionary psychologist is taking on post partum depression with an interesting — yet morbid — new theory. University of Albany researcher Gordon Gallup says that — from an evolutionary standpoint, anyway — choosing bottle over breast is tantamount to sending your body a biological telegram that your baby has died.
It seems just uttering the word “breastfeeding” and emotions flare. When should you stop? How much is too much? What will it do to your breasts?
