Brazil is the latest of several nations that have moved to prohibit the spanking of children. A bill sent to the Brazilian Congress yesterday calls for parents who hit their kids to receive a warning, or even psychological treatment. South American nations like Uruguay and Venezuela have already placed a ban on spanking, and the U.K. recently proposed a similar measure.
The Associated Press reports that while child abuse has been outlawed in Brazil, “the new measure explicitly prohibits parents and guardians from using corporal punishment” or any “cruel or degrading treatment” that humiliates children. I guess it’s a good thing I’ve never caved to my basest desires in a frustrated moment and made my daughter wear her poopy underwear on her head. Because that would definitely be humiliating.
Or not. One of the things I find most frustrating as a parent is that try though as I might to use the techniques I’ve honed from years of watching Supernanny, my daughter is still pooping her pants on the regular. She’s elligible for kindergarten in the fall, but I’m reticent to send her, because I don’t want to make her bathroom issues the teacher’s problem. No amount of discipline has inspired her to change her lazy ways. I’ve tried throwing her dirty underwear away, I’ve tried ignoring the problem, I’ve tried bribes, I’ve tried using a serious voice, I’ve tried being loving. I have, yes, even spanked her a handful of times (no pun intended), but I don’t advocate it, and each time I’ve regretted it. My mother, on the other hand, thinks physical punishment is often what “does the trick.”

Last month’s reports of Gisele Bundchen giving birth to baby Benjamin at a Boston area hospital turn out to have been greatly exaggerated. She indeed gave birth … to baby Benjamin … but she did it at home in her tub.
The supermodel revealed this particular detail in an interview on “Fantastico,” her country’s version of “60 Minutes.”
She told the interviewer that she had opted for homebirth with a midwife after watching Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein’s “The Business of Being Born,” a documentary about homebirth, hospital birth, midwives and the choices women sometimes have — and sometimes have to face — when bringing a baby into the world. Brazilian high court Chief Justice Gilmar Mendes lifted a stay that prevented Sean Goldman from being reunited with his father David Goldman. While the decision makes it possible for the boy to return to the United States, the situation is still up in the air.
A 2-year-old boy is recovering after four of the most dangerous needles embedded into his body were removed by surgeons in Brazil. The aforementioned needles were found in the boy’s lung and near his heart. His stepfather sits in jail for forcing the implements into his son.
It appears David Goldman will not be able to take his son, Sean Goldman, to the United States as planned. Goldman had hoped to take Sean to the US before Christmas, and had traveled to Brazil this week to pick up his son. On Thursday, Brazil’s high court ruled to halt Sean’s return.
There is renewed hope for David Goldman, the American father who’s been fighting for custody of his son for over a year. Today, a court in Brazil has ruled in Goldman’s favor and ordered that his 9 year old son be returned to his custody.
Chilean Olympic weightlifter Elizabeth Poblete had no idea she was pregnant. So she was pretty surprised when, during a training session — for weightlifting! — she had a baby.
The very tiny boy — doctors say he was three months premature — was rushed to the hospital in Sao Paulo, where Poblete lives, just after birth, as was the 22-year-old new mother Poblete. Continue reading »
