Researchers show how autistic brains are different.
Scientists are learning more about the brains of people with autism and how they differ from those without.
Autism spectrum disorders are believed to be caused by a combination of genetics and the environment. As Professor Daniel Geschwind, from the University of California, Los Angeles, says “If you randomly pick 20 people with autism, the cause of each person’s disease will be unique.
But an examination of how genes and proteins interact in autistic people’s brains revealed there were shared patterns that could hold the answer to defining the origin of autism. Continue reading »
Smart(er) boy!
Yet another study has concluded that breast is, in fact, best. But what’s even more interesting about this one is that breast-fed boys did even better than their non-breast-fed counterparts in school.
Girls? Not much of a difference.
The study, published in Pediatrics, found that infants who were nursed at least for six months performed better in school at age 10 than kids who were formula-fed. Academics at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Perth, Australia, looked at the academic performance of kids whose mothers had enrolled in the study years ago. They say they adjusted for gender, income, maternal education, and things like whether the kid was read to at home. Continue reading »
Exercise works out the body and the brain.
We all know that kids need exercise. Regular physical activity is an important weapon in the fight against childhood obesity and kids who exercise are better able to meet physical and emotional challenges. Exercise helps strengthen bones and muscles, decreases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and might even lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Dear children: There is a reason why I annoy you with all those warnings not to run with scissors/pencils/sharp sticks. And this is it.
A 14-month-old Chinese boy is being described as “lucky” after a chopstick was removed from his skull. The toddler was playing with the chopsticks when he fell, and the stick went up his nose and actually made its way 4 cm into his brain.
A new study in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology found that some moms get a natural high when they hear their baby’s cry. For others, however, the cry triggers a part of the brain that produces feelings of disgust.
The difference, interestingly, has nothing to do with that particular mother-baby bond.
Instead, each mother’s reaction depends on how bonded she was with her own mother. Continue reading »
