If you’re a regular reader, you know I’m not a huge fan of the tone of the writing over at XOJane. It’s a bit too flippant, unnecessarily pseudo-sexual and quasi-controversial for my taste, as I made plain in my criticism of Jane Pratt’s May essay on miscarriage, in which she used her boobs as the lede. Massive birth control recall due to faulty pill placement
News flash: your birth control pills may not be working. Right now, this month.
A major manufacturer of oral contraceptives, Alabama-based Qualitest Pharmaceuticals, has issued a huge recall of pill packets. The problem: pills were put in the wrong slots in the plastic packages, meaning women won’t get the right pills at the right time of month.
That, in turn, means the pills won’t be effective at preventing pregnancy. Which many women were no doubt relying on them to do.
Oops? Are you sure?
A survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that a significant number of surprise pregnancies should be all that big of a surprise.
Most mistimed or unwanted pregnancies, researchers found, happened not because of birth control failure, rather, in its absence. Or at the very least, after it was used incorrectly. Continue reading »

The Food and Drug Administration is charged with, among other things, protecting the public health by regulating prescription and non-prescription drugs. As part of that responsibility, they decide which drugs are safe for over-the-counter use and which can be obtained only with a doctor’s prescription. Drugs that are intended to be taken daily for an unlimited amount of time are never approved for use without a prescription.
