Today’s shopping tip: buy your daughter a dark-skinned Barbie. The African-American beauties can be had for a song–at least at Walmart. Prices of the black dolls have been found in some stores to be cut way, way back–down to less than half of the white dolls.
Many — perhaps even most — women wear make-up. Personally, I don’t like it or even approve of it — it’s disgusting and it hides the real person — but if women (or men) wish to wear it, that’s perfectly okay. Hair coloring, colored contacts, and even piercings are more serious, but still acceptable in today’s society. Even plastic surgery and Botox is rather ho-hum these days. But does that apply to kids too? Apparently, a British woman who bills herself as the Real Life Barbie thinks so — her daughter has already started using Botox at 16.
Want to know if the latest incarnation of Barbie has a figure as impossible as her forebears? You’ll have to check under the burqa.
Barbie has been covered head to toe in bright colors with just a bit of white mesh where her face should be as part of an auction meant to help Sotheby’s raise money for Save the Children. Continue reading »
Have you seen the new African-American Barbies? I haven’t. But according to this Broadsheet post, the dolls are generating much discussion from parents of all races.
See, the dolls, unlike Barbies of old, are designed to reflect the way black women actually look, versus the old Barbies which were exactly the same as the white ones but made out of dark brown plastic and topped with the same long, straight hair in black instead of blonde. Doll designer Stacy McBride-Irby drew inspiration from her own young daughters for the dolls, which have wider noses and fuller lips.
