President Obama’s Secret Weapon? He’s a Baby Whisperer (Video)
President Obama may be the commander in chief, may be one of the most important figures in the world today, and certainly a man with his hands full. But he has one more attribute in his arsenal…he can silence a crying baby in record time!
At a meet and greet on the White House lawn recently, Michelle Obama held a very upset and crying baby. Giving up on the task of holding her, she went to hand the babe back to her mommy. But Barack Obama? He came to the rescue. He grabbed the baby and in seconds flat the infant was calm and cry-free. He may not have the gift of getting his political foes to stop their shrieking but he certainly has a way with the babies… and he knows it (check out the “yeah, I’m gooood” look he gives Michelle towards the end).
You can watch the adorable video right here. Continue reading »
A Touching Father’s Day Essay from President Obama
Barack Obama’s father left when the future president was just two years old.
While he credits his mom and grandparents for his solid and loving upbringing, he says he always felt his father’s absence anyway.
Just in time for Father’s Day, President Obama writes an essay for People magazine about his efforts to be the father he never had to daughters Sasha and Malia.

President Obama: Too Many Tests Make Education Boring
“Too much testing makes education boring for kids”, President Barack Obama said Monday at a town hall meeting hosted at a Washington, D.C. high school.
“Too often what we have been doing is using these tests to punish students or to, in some cases, punish schools,” the president told students and parents.
The president, who is pushing to rewrite some of the nation’s education law, would like to see students take fewer standardized tests and school performance measured in ways other than just exam results. Continue reading »

First Lady Michelle Obama Gets Personal on TODAY

First Lady Michelle Obama talking to Matt Lauer.
“I don’t think there’s an issue that my husband deals with that isn’t tough. It’s hard being the President of the United States. But I think he’s doing a great job.”
That’s First Lady Michelle Obama on her husband’s leadership skills. Mrs. Obama sat down with TODAY host Matt Lauer this morning and talked about raising kids in the White House and how proud she is of her husband’s accomplishments and demeanor.
The First Lady didn’t shy away from sharing intimate details about the Obama family’s private life, confirming that President Obama successfully quit smoking about a year ago. When asked how he was able to do it in spite of all the stress he faces, Michelle replied, “I don’t know. Once he made the commitment to quit, I left him alone because it’s a very personal thing. I don’t think that there’s one right way to do it. I just know that once a person makes the decision, they have to find the best path. So I said when a person is doing the right thing, you leave ‘em alone.”
The First Lady is confident that despite having to grow up in the spotlight, her daughters Sasha and Malia are doing just fine. ”There are a lot of great kids who have come out of the White House,” she said. ”The Bush girls are magnificent. Chelsea Clinton, she’s a solid young woman. Caroline Kennedy – I mean, we’ve got a pretty good track record. So the Obama girls hopefully will be in that group.” Continue reading »
State of the Union: A Recap for Parents Who Missed It
During tonight’s State of the Union address, many parents were so busy putting kids to bed, packing tomorrow’s lunches, and paying bills that you may not have had time to tune in. Here’s a quick recap of President Obama’s speech (paraphrased), on a few of the topics that are important for America’s families:
[Note: This is a paraphrase of Obama’s words, not mine. I’ll be sure to post tomorrow on my big idea for America’s future.]
On the Race to Educate Our Kids:
As many as a quarter of our students aren’t even finishing high school. America is falling behind in the proportion of young people with college degrees, at a time when we need college degrees more than ever. Every child deserves a chance to succeed, and the responsibility begins in our homes and in our communities—in our families. Parents are the first to instill the love of learning in a child. Only parents can make sure that the TV is turned off and that homework gets done. We need to teach our kids that it’s not just the winner of the Super Bowl who deserves to be celebrated, but the winner of the science fair. We need to teach kids that success is not a function of fame and PR, but hard work and discipline.
Michelle Obama Pregnant? Not So Farfetched
So apparently there is a rumor making the rounds of the interwebs today claiming that Michelle Obama is knocked up, with a due date in late summer. Obviously, this is almost certainly untrue, and in fact, the source of the rumor can’t even be confirmed, much less any kind of actual, newsworthy source.
But it’s fun to think about a baby in The White House; after all, it’s been a while. In fact, the last time we had a First Newborn was half a century ago when Mrs. John F. Kennedy gave birth to baby John-John only two weeks after her husband was elected President. The next time we had a First Family who seemed young enough to conceivably (heh ;-) become new parents was in 1992, when the Clintons rode into Washington. Pregnancy and adoption rumors occasionally swirled around Bill and Hillary in those early years of his presidency, but of course, it never happened. Chelsea remained an only child,
But this very thing DID happen to Britain’s First Family. In 1998, when Tony Blair was Prime Minister, and he and his wife, Cherie were already parents of three adolescents, Mrs. Blair turned up unexpectedly pregnant. At age 45, she gave birth to their healthy son, Leo. The whole country was enthralled with her pregnancy, and there was great national excitement on the day Leo Blair was born, and when he was brought home to Number 10 Downing Street.
