Yeah, I'm THAT mom. You want to say something about it?
There comes a time in many women’s lives when they make a startling realization. For me, that time came last week. I haven’t become my mom (I should be so lucky). No, it dawned on me that I’ve become that mom.
You know that one I’m talking about.
In fact, I know you do because you are either that mom, too, or you know that mom personally (many of them, probably).
Here are the 8 ways I know I’ve become that mom. Oh, and please tell me in the comments how and when you knew you became that mom (misery loves company, after all).
Parenting can be so damn stressful. Kids push boundaries and buttons, and it’s a parent’s job to stay calm and steady in the face of it all. But most of us don’t perform this job with absolute perfection. We sometimes and say things to our kids we wish we could stuff back inside our mouths. I’m sure most of us have some cringeworthy moments to mull over and make up for.
But some verbal mistakes are worse than others. Would you read your daughter's diary?
Candy Schulman learned the hard way why you should never read your child’s diary. She might right about you. And it might not be very nice.
Candy gave her 8-year-old a diary. At first, the diary was a shared experience: her little girl would write in it and then read the brief, simple entries aloud to her mom. Then one day, it became private. No more guests in the house of her daughter’s secret thoughts. The diary became a literally locked treasure that Amy quietly kept away from her mom. Candy missed being invited to read the diary but respected Amy’s privacy.
Until the day Amy left her diary sitting unlocked on the table in the living room. The temptation was too much for Mom, who dug in to read her daughter’s juicy secrets.
Babble blogger and author Katie Allison Granju has been writing openly about her life as a mother for years. She has walked the line between keeping her kids’ lives private while divulging details of her own. For years, she held back one fact in particular — to protect her son’s privacy, to keep judgment at bay. Until now.
While sitting at her son’s bedside as he fights to recover in an intensive care unit, she decided she no longer wanted to keep this part of her life private.
Her latest Home/Work post title says it all: “The parenting secret I am no longer willing to keep.” Katie writes, quite bravely — and with some lingering internal conflict about whether she’s doing the right thing — that she is the mother of a drug addict. Remember Donna Simpson, the “Fattest Mom in America”? At 520 pounds, she held the record for heaviest woman to give birth after the birth of her daughter. And now she’s trying to reach 1,000 pounds. On purpose. Not everyone thinks this is a good idea, however. At least one doctor is not only speaking out against Simpson’s goal but is also putting up the money to get her to stop.
Donna Simpson is a world record holder. In 2007 she broke the record for heaviest woman to give birth, at 520 lb (or as the Telegraph points out “the same as two elephant calves”).
Not satisfied with her single record as world’s heaviest mother, Simpson has set her aim on an even larger distinction. She is pushing to weigh 1,000 lbs. And she’d like you to pay to watch her do it. Continue reading »
Anyone who doubts the Internet’s addictive potential need only look at this sad case of child neglect. A husband and wife have been caught and arrested after their 3-month-old daughter died of severe dehydration and malnutrition. The couple had been on the run for five months. Police say the couples’ addiction to online gaming led them to spend all their time at an Internet café, only coming home once a day to feed their child. Continue reading »
