We all like to be a little naughty sometimes. That goes for parents just as much as kids. Especially in an atmosphere of parental perfectionism, being a little imperfect can be a huge relief, and a thrill. Babble’s “Bad Parent” series is a regular testament to the appeal of “bad” parenting.
But what about when the mischief goes to far? What do you do when your mom friend’s parenting style makes you queasy?
MomLogic has a great guest post by a woman who gradually realized that her new BFF wasn’t merely flouting the prissy standards of modern parenting. She was actually a bad mom.
What if bad mothering — the truly shocking, sickening kind, the kind that leads to child abuse or even worse — was something you were hardwired for?
Some researchers say they think it is. According to this Times of London story, neurologist Craig Kinsley believes that the brain creates a new cluster of cells during pregnancy that appear to be related to good or bad parenting behaviors. These “maternal neurons” get switched on after birth — and too few lead to bad mothering behaviors.

We’re nearly halfway through the school year, and most of my friends and family have logged lots of hours helping out at their children’s schools. We’re all told it’s part of good parenting, and that parental involvement is a huge factor in a child’s success in school. Plus, there are so many benefits in terms of meeting other parents, getting the skinny on which teachers are good and which aren’t, and generally getting plugged into that network of information that never makes the school newsletter.

It would have been bad enough if a mom switched out her kid’s urine for her own in a drug test. But to make it believable, a Michigan mom first dosed her kid with methadone to make it seem like the pee of a recovering drug addict.

So, word on the street is that it’s cool to be a ‘bad mother.’
I really feel compelled to applaud this shift in parenting culture, since for the entire 7 years that I’ve been a mother, I’ve felt and seen great pressure on moms and dads to do everything perfectly.
There’s a tremendous amount of judgment and the standards are very high.
So I think it’s a breath of fresh air to hear that the trend is now sweeping the other way. Continue reading »
